Volunteer Activities• Archaeology • Conservation Education • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of NPS DescriptionTonto National Monument is looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals with a passion for the outdoors, history, and sharing knowledge to volunteer with us for the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. Tonto National Monument protects two 14th century Salado cliff dwellings. While most known for its cliff dwellings and prehistoric culture, Tonto is also rich in wildlife, botany, geology, pioneer history, and sweeping views of the Sonoran Desert landscape. Duties:  Hike a steep  ½ mile paved trail gaining 350 feet in elevation to the Lower Cliff Dwelling Staff Lower Cliff Dwelling, providing informal interpretation to visitors and resource protection Staff Visitor Center desk with park rangers, providing information to visitors about the Monument, reminding visitors of proper hiking safety such as water and proper footwear, and checking America the Beautiful passes with photo identification for admission Operate Western National Park Association park store register, assisting visitors with product questions, purchases, and discounts Work with park staff to develop and present formal interpretive programs with proper outlines such as Upper Cliff Dwelling tours, Lower Cliff Dwelling tours, night hikes, evening programs, patio talks, or guided walks Assist education technician in conducting on-site field trip programs and in-class visits based on state curriculum standards Attend off site outreach events to promote National Parks in nearby communities Assist with resource management staff while preforming various duties including pulling weeds, checking game cameras, or monitoring sites and follow all relevant procedures established by resource staff Attend field days with staff to explore surrounding area and increase knowledge Assist park rangers with various projects including photography, publication development, community outreach, and digital media Volunteers may work intermittently, or up to 40 hours per week consisting of 8 hour days. If desiring an on-site R.V. pad with full hook-ups, a minimum of 32 hours per week per person will be required for a minimum of 2 months. Area Information: Tonto National Monument overlooks the Tonto Basin in southeastern Arizona. Tonto National Forest and Roosevelt Lake Recreation area are adjacent to the Monument. Full shopping facilities are available in Globe (27 miles) and Payson (50 miles).
