Spend your summer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley. We are seeking a team of two to serve as a park host at Fern Ridge Lake and Dam near the city of Eugene.
The Recreation Operations of the Willamette Valley Project is seeking a highly motivated, energetic couple or 2-person team to serve as a park host at Fern Ridge Lake and Dam. The primary duties and responsibilities of the Fern Ridge Host is to open and close our day-use only parks and helping prevent vandalism to facilities and natural resources by acting as “eyes and ears” for park rangers.
Position runs May 15 – September 15. RV campsite with full hookups is provided in exchange for 30 hours of work per week (split between two people). Additionally, after a volunteer has completed at least 250 hours of service they are eligible to receive an America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.
Fern Ridge Lake, a popular recreation area for sailing, power boating and water skiing, is just 12 miles from downtown Eugene. Six (6) park sites and several remote access points around the lake offer a variety of day use recreation opportunities such as picnicking, swimming, fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing. A private concession on the peninsula at the south end of the lake has overnight camping sites. The Fern Ridge Dam was completed in 1941 and provides needed flood control. The area includes extensive wetlands and provides unique habitat for a variety of wildlife and wintering waterfowl populations.
A background check is required for this position.
The Fern Ridge Lake Hosts will be responsible for opening and closing several day-use park gates and vault toilets at sunrise/dusk along with the project office entrance gate (time varies), gate five (5) days a week. Hosts will need to conduct sweeps throughout the parks before closing. Additionally, hosts will sweep the asphalt at the project office entrance gate and RV site.
Hosts will act as the “eyes and ears” for the Park Rangers in the parks by observing visitor activities and noting anything suspicious. Hosts will not and should not approach any violations in progress, and instead contact area Park Rangers. Other light maintenance duties may be assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator to fill the 30 hours per week commitment.
This position requires working a minimum of 30 hours/week spread out over five days with Friday, Saturday and Sunday being required. You may request which two days off during Mon-Thurs that you prefer.
Must pass a federal background check.
Ability to meet and greet the public with a friendly and helpful demeanor. Ability to make sound common-sense decisions, use materials at hand to resolve a minor situation, have initiative, willingness to learn, and a profound appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Good communication skills, interpersonal skills, and general maintenance skills. Training will be provided. Ability to safely open and close gates twice a day in remote areas (morning and evening) is essential.
