ADDRESS: Dorena Lake; 75819 Shortridge Hill Road; Cottage Grove, Oregon 97424
DEPT: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
DATES: 4/17/2023 – 9/15/2023
DESCRIPTION:
Spend your summer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley and the “Covered Bridge Capital of the West”. We are seeking a team of two to serve as a park host at Schwarz Campground located below Dorena Lake Dam.
The Recreation Operations of the Willamette Valley Project is seeking a highly motivated, energetic couple or 2-person team to serve as the Schwarz Campground Host below Dorena Lake Dam. The primary duties and responsibilities of the campground host are to help USACE park rangers ensure that campers have a safe, enjoyable visit while also educating campers of rules and regulations.
Position runs April 17 – September 15. RV campsite with full hookups is provided in exchange for 30 hours of work per week (split between two people). Additionally, after a volunteer has completed at least 250 hours of service they are eligible to receive an America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.
Dorena Lake and Schwarz Campground is set in the gentle rolling hills of the Calapooya Mountains, less than 10 miles from the quaint town of Cottage Grove. Dorena Lake is a great location for boating, water skiing, fishing, and swimming. Nearby Baker Bay County Park offers a boat ramp and marina.
The Row River Trail stretches 14 miles from downtown Cottage Grove, past the Dorena Dam and along the entire north side of the lake. This popular path is open for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
The Cottage Grove Scenic Byway Tour meanders past seven historic covered bridges in the area. The bridges were built in the 1920s and 1930s, and some are still in use today.
Schwarz Campground offers several single and double-family campsites and six group sites. Flush toilets, drinking water, showers and a dump station are provided. Younger campers love the park’s big playground.
Schwarz Campground and all Army Corps of Engineers land around both Dorena and Cottage Grove Lakes have an alcohol prohibition. All Corps personnel, contractors, volunteers, and the public are required to follow this restriction.
Hosts will work the entrance booth and monitor the campground. Booth operations include customer service to campers, explaining the rules and regulations, selling Interagency Federal Lands passes, checking campers in and out on Recreation 1 Stop/Recreation.gov, and answering the phone. Schwarz is a cashless campground so you will not have to handle any money. Monitoring campgrounds includes ensuring campers are adhering to rules, everyone is in the proper site, everyone has paid for their site, and answering questions from the campers. It will not be your responsibility to enforce the rules, however you will need to be comfortable speaking with campers about the rules and regulations.
Other host duties may include light maintenance, operating small engine equipment (leaf blower, weed whacker, etc.), assisting in education and outreach programs, and light paperwork.
Must be able to pass a federal background check position.
Ability to meet and greet the public with a friendly and helpful demeanor. Ability to make sound common-sense decisions, use materials at hand to resolve a minor situation, have initiative, willingness to learn, and a profound appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Good communication skills, interpersonal skills, computer operations, driving a golf cart, and general maintenance skills. Training will be provided.
