DESCRIPTION:
Denali National Park and Preserve is looking for a great volunteer to help with public volunteer events, volunteer appreciation events and Volunteer Program outreach.
This is a dual position, two days per week (16 hours) in the office as the Events and Outreach Coordinator and two days (16 hours) per week in the field providing wildlife safety messages to park visitors at the Savage River area and occasionally at other trail heads and on trails in the front country (developed) area of the park.
Every duty will strengthen the Volunteer-In-Parks Program at Denali National Park and Preserve. Civic engagement is key to accomplishing the National Park Service mission. Visits to national parks inspire people to plan another trip, to tell their friends, and often, to ask how they can help. Providing avenues for visitors and advocates of national parks to volunteer and “give back” is crucial to preserving the natural and cultural history of Denali National Park and Preserve; and a strong and responsive Volunteer Program is necessary to accomplish this.
Assist the Volunteer Program Manager with various office chores as required. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Events & Outreach
~Welcome new volunteers and provide them orientations to the park and volunteer program
~Assist volunteers and supervisors in completing volunteer service agreements and other paperwork
~Answer phones, e-mail and other inquiries from potential group and episodic volunteers
~Coordinate with and provide support to volunteer supervisors to schedule projects for group and episodic volunteers
~Coordinate and provide support at special events (National Trails Day, Volunteer Recognition Event(s), Dandelion Demolition, Need for Seed, etc.)
~Meet and greet vacation volunteers (Sierra Club, American Hiking Society and Wilderness Volunteers)
~Participate in cross-training to learn about and assist other programs and divisions in the park in accomplishing their missions, including searches and rescues, research, and Road Lottery.
Wildlife Safety
Volunteer will assist NPS staff by providing wildlife safety messages to park visitors at the Savage River area and occasionally at other trail heads and on trails in the front country (developed) area of the park.
~Provide park visitors information about the park, trail, shuttle bus and road systems, natural history, and recreational opportunities through informal interpretive contacts
~Protect park resources by helping visitors understand park regulations and safety information.
~Assist park staff by staffing the Savage River Parking Area, as well as roving the popular trails within one mile of the respective trailheads.
~Report emergencies, missing persons, or law enforcement concerns to park staff.
~Help with traffic control, litter pick-up, minor maintenance tasks, and other duties as needed.
~Assist with visitor concerns and emergencies where possible.
~Promote ethical wildlife watching practices.
~Encourage visitor compliance with closures.
~Convey bear/wildlife safety messages to the public in accordance with the park’s Bear-Human Conflict Management Plan.
~Report to the Alaska Region Communication Center (ARCC), following its protocols for radio use and procedures, including calling into service, calling out of service, reporting incidents, requesting assistance, etc.
~Utilize good teamwork abilities with other volunteers and park staff.
~Other related duties as assigned
This is a uniformed position, the volunteer is required to wear the Denali National Park and Preserve volunteer uniform.
Volunteer must have exemplary customer service skills, be proficient in Microsoft software computer applications including Word, Excel, Access, OneDrive, Teams, email, calendars, etc.
In addition, the volunteer must have the ability to work in all weather conditions. It can rain, snow , sleet, etc. any day of the year in Interior Alaska.

The Events and Outreach volunteer will work in an office environment. The volunteer will share a work station with fellow volunteers in the Administration Building in the park headquarters area. The building is heated, has running water, restroom, break area and electricity. Savage River volunteers spend a great deal of their workdays outdoors. They must be prepared to work in a variety of weather conditions.
