Description of Duties:
Resident Maintenance Host will be responsible for painting, carpentry, light and heavy equipment operation, small engine repair, electrical maintenance or plumbing maintenance and organizing the park shop area.
Resident Maintenance Hosts will work a minimum of 25 hours/week on their scheduled days. There is no required daily hour amount, and the volunteer may flex their schedule to the needs of the assigned tasks.
Resident Maintenance Hosts will keep an accurate log of their hours worked and submit them to their supervisor each month.
Resident Maintenance Hosts will not enforce park rules directly but will contact park staff. When addressing a potential concern, remain polite and advise the visitor of park policy.
Resident Maintenance Hosts will answer questions asked by visitors. If the volunteer does not have an immediate answer, they should contact the Ranger Station or refer the visitor to the Ranger Station for an answer.
Resident Maintenance Hosts will carry a park radio for communication while on duty.
Resident Maintenance Hosts job assignments will vary depending on the needs of the park and the interest of the volunteer. This position will cover a wide variety of activities including grounds, facilities and equipment maintenance.
The Resident Maintenance Hosts may be responsible for covering the Campground Host or Cabin Host duties which include cleaning campground bathhouses/cabins, removing trash from campsites/cabins, removing trash & ash from fire pits, raking or blowing off sites.
Resident Maintenance Hosts should report any safety concerns to Park Staff.
Resident Maintenance Hosts should turn in any lost and found items to the Ranger Station.

Volunteering allows you to maintain a valuable Florida resource and provide visitors with a positive and comfortable experience. The Resident Maintenance Hosts will not be charged for their site during the agreed upon stay. Park Management may assist them with finding positions at other parks. If a Resident Maintenance Hosts wishes to develop a skill or learn about a park function, Park Management will assist the host with training and experience if possible.
Volunteers are provided with a T-Shirt, name tag, and park specific training. Upon completion of 250 hours, volunteers receive an annual pass for all Florida State Parks. Volunteers are eligible for recognition and awards on a district and statewide level. Volunteers are also eligible for workers compensation if injured while volunteering. Volunteers are included in all park staff gatherings as well (potlucks, celebrations, holiday parties etc.)
Standards of Performance:
Selection of Resident Maintenance Host will be done by a competitive review of applications and interviews.
No person will be promised or guaranteed any Resident Maintenance Host position for any season or time period.
Resident Maintenance Host will occupy a site in the park which will have full hook-up facilities which include water, electric and sewer.
No Resident Maintenance Host may serve more than 16 weeks during a fiscal year.
No person will be considered for a resident volunteer position for a period of less than 4 consecutive weeks.
All planned absences must be discussed with the supervisor at least 2 weeks in advance.
All Resident Maintenance Host will be dressed in the appropriate volunteer uniform while on duty. 2 uniform t-shirts will be provided by the park per resident host. The volunteer will provide their own tan/khaki pants and shoes.
Resident Maintenance Host will not set up personal equipment outside the confines of their assigned campsite.
Resident Maintenance Host will receive no compensation for work performed other than a free campsite for the duration of their time as a general resident host. All fees for resale items or commodities must be paid for by the resident volunteer including ice, firewood, and other items for sale at the park.
The Resident Maintenance Host position and volunteer agreement may be terminated at any time by either park management or the general resident host. The general resident hosts must vacate the assigned site within 24 hours after the volunteer agreement is terminated.
The Resident Maintenance Host may be required to take training courses from time to time and completion of the training courses will be a condition to continue volunteering.
Resident Maintenance Host may NOT use park telephones, computers or any other equipment for personal use.
The Resident Maintenance Host will NOT drive or operate fire trucks, tractors, trailers, ATVs or chainsaws without prior permission from Park Management.
The Resident Maintenance Host must adhere to the park’s pet policies including no pets in the water or in park buildings.
Resident Maintenance Host are expected to occupy their site during the agreed upon stay period, with the exception of prior arranged extended absences. Any absence of a general resident host for more than 72 hours without prior arrangement will automatically terminate the volunteer agreement.
Any personal items left on a campsite by the Resident Maintenance Host including the camping vehicle, tent, and all other personal belongings will be removed from the site by the park at the owner’s expense 24 hours after the volunteer agreement is terminated.
The Resident Maintenance Host may not sublet their site and only those individuals who are identified and approved at the initial appointment may occupy the general resident host site. In general, this means immediate family and/or dependents.
Volunteers are viewed by the public as park staff and are recognized and evaluated by the public as such.
Resident Maintenance Host will not discuss confidential park information including park staff/volunteer/employee personal information with the public.
Resident Maintenance Host will not disclose the locations of any money, equipment or other park related sensitive items to the public.
Resident Maintenance Host are expected to maintain a professional attitude at all times.
Any questions about the Resident Maintenance Host duties should be directed at Park Management.
Resident Maintenance Host are expected to maintain a proper appearance at all times. This includes keeping the occupied campsite clean, keeping noise levels to an acceptable level, not constructing permanent/semi-permanent structures on the campsite.
Consumption of alcohol is permitted on your site while off duty and out of uniform. Proper conduct is expected.
No park vehicle will be operated after consuming alcohol of any amount.
Personal safety is the responsibility of the Resident Maintenance Host. All necessary Personal Protective Equipment will be provided by the park. Resident Maintenance Host are required to wear a PPE as required for the task.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Desired:
Strong attention to detail and organizational skill are needed. The ability to work with others and alone.
Any experience in painting, carpentry, light and heavy equipment operation, small engine repair, electrical maintenance or plumbing maintenance is welcomed. Past experience as a Resident Maintenance Host in the Florida Park Service is a plus, but not required.
Special Requirements:
All volunteers:
Must be friendly and courteous to visitors at all times.
Must have a completed volunteer application on file.
Must complete the Certifications and Agreements on the Volunteer website.
Must sign a Volunteer Agreement on arrival at park. (Renewed annually or when volunteering at another park)
Must provide a copy of valid driver’s license.
Must pass a state and federal sexual predator/offender check.
Must have own RV/Motorhome/Trailer
