DESCRIPTION:
The Laramie Ranger District is looking for energetic volunteer hosts at the following sites; Tie City and Yellow Pine Campgrounds, Brooklyn Lake and Nash Fork Campgrounds, Rob Roy Campground, Vedauwoo Campground. All sites are surrounded by an amazing trail system that is frequently used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. This position will be responsible for helping the district staff maintain the campground. The host will be the friendly face of the agency when talking with campers.
Hosts will receive $25 per day for reimbursement. Propane, gas and mileage for driving around campgrounds, and gas bought for a personal generator can be reimbursed with receipts.
Brooklyn Lake Campground and Nash Fork Campground
The campground is located on Brooklyn Lake. Every site has a view of the lake ranging from great to spectacular. The lake is a nice canoeing lake in the shadow of the snow capped Browns Peak. There are 102 recreational lakes in this area. No power, water, or sewer hookups are available. Potable water is available inside the Brooklyn Lake Campground, look for the water pump. A black water dump station is available in Laramie.
Tie City Campground and Yellow Pine Campground
The campground is convenient to a network of challenging mountain bike trails. There are nearby corrals. Tie City was named for the railroad men who cut the ties for the Union Pacific Railroad from this forest. The South Fork of Lodgepole Creek runs close to the Tie City Campground and across the 719 road from Yellow Pine, which has good brook trout fishing. Rob Roy Campground
The campground is comprised of a cascading, tight loop configuration along a hillside among mixed pines. Some sites overlook the Rob Roy Reservoir, but most are tucked into the hillside. Rob Roy Reservoir is 500 acres and is a popular area for boating and water skiing. There are 65 sites that provide tables, fire rings, trash pick-up, and vault toilets. Max trailer length is 35 feet. There are facilities nearby in Albany. No power, water, or sewer hookups are available. Potable water is available from two hand pumps. A black water dump station is available in Laramie.
Vedauwoo Campground
The campground is composed of two loops, winding around the boulders, slabs and cliffs of the Vedauwoo rock formation. The formation is made up of 10 square miles of weathered Sherman granite, providing lots of space to explore. This area is constructed to blend in with the natural beauty of the surroundings. The vegetation is a variety of Limber pine, Engleman spruce, Douglas fir, and Aspen. The general area was once used as a hideout for outlaws. There is access to rock climbing and a nature trail through the rocks. The host has black water hookups. No power or water hookups are available. Potable water is available inside the RV campground from a hand pump. A black water dump station is available in Laramie.
DUTIES
Descriptions of services to be performed by volunteer Campground Hosts:
1. Greet and assist visitors, answer questions and explain regulations which apply to them. Distribute maps and handout brochures. May assist campers in locating a campsite, must be familiar with local points of interest and the location of services that might be requested by campers such as towing, groceries, churches, tourist attractions and local events.
2. Some Campground will be reservable on recreation.gov. The Host will download the daily arrival report from recreation.gov and post reservation dates on site posts.
2. Will perform maintenance work around the campground such as litter pickup, cleaning and stocking of restrooms, provide information to FS staff on potential problems, and disseminate information to campers.
3. May assist in campground public relations, educational activities, and special events/activities.
4. Clean campsites by performing minor maintenance tasks such as raking the campsite pad, washing tables, cleaning out fire rings, picking up litter, and reporting any damage to the FS. Each site should be cleaned after every camper leave and before another campers arrive.
5. Host will not attempt to discipline or apprehend any guests in violation of the rules. Hosts should inform campers of rules and regulations, but are not to participate in any high risk activity. Host must set an example by being a model camper practicing good housekeeping at all times in and around their assigned site and by observing all rules and regulations.
6. Host is expected to work most weekends and holidays during their term. Be observant for activities within the campground requiring immediate attention. Notify the FS as these problems arise. Other minor tasks that might be asked of a Campground Host:
· Sweep cobwebs from buildings
· Keep track of occupied or vacant campsites
· Direct campers to vacant sites
· Inform campers of food storage safety tips
7. Keep a written report of complaints and criticism of FS facilities, report situations that could affect the health and safety of visitors and report any maintenance items which need immediate attention. The host may maintain other written records as requested by the FS.
DAILY:
-Spot Check Toilets:
· Restock toilet paper.
· Sweep.
· Clean any obvious mess.
-Reservation Management
· Handwrite reservation dates on site posts.
· If a reserved campsite is not occupied on the first day of the reservation the campsite will be made available the following day at 2:00 p.m. to first-come-first-served visitors.
-Talk With Visitors:
· Check in with campers as they are setting camp, and with other campers around the campground.
· Answer questions.
· Check that campers have their fee envelope posted.
-Spot Check Campsites:
· Clean any recently vacated campsites. This includes fire pits, bear boxes, and micro trash.
· Make sure occupied campsites are clean and in good order.
· Remove old post tickets.
· Bag and dispose of ashes when cool.
· Tighten bolts on Picnic Tables.
· Remove any stickers or graffiti from tables, signs and restrooms.
Prohibited Activities:
The volunteer will be required to behave in a manner appropriate to a workplace. The following is a list of prohibited activities:
· Possession or use of firearms during the performance of official duties.
· Consumption of intoxicating beverages during official duty.
· Possession of illegal drugs (including marijuana).
· Derogatory language, fighting, intimidating behavior, discrimination, sexual harassment, violent or threatening behavior.
· Violation of any State game or fish regulation.
· Violation of any Federal, State or local law.
· Selling or distributing non-agency products or literature.
· Disclosing confidential information.
QUALIFICATIONS
Host must have a valid drivers license and pass a background check. This person must be able to walk up to 2 miles at a time and lift 30 pounds. Also a friendly positive attitude is essential to be successful in this position. Must have an RV, camper trailer, or something similar.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position will be outside in a developed campground environment and will be subject to weather and environmental factors. This position will be contacting and interacting with members of the public.
