DESCRIPTION:

The Backcountry Office Volunteer is a uniformed representative of the National Park Service working in a public facing office position assisting visitors in planning and scheduling their backcountry camping trips in Yellowstone National Park. The successful candidate will have knowledge of hiking and camping in the backcountry and the ability to advise visitors regarding their camping plans, while maintaining a positive courteous attitude.

This position functions within the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection in Yellowstone National Park. The Backcountry Office Volunteer is a uniformed representative of the National Park Service working in a public facing office position. The Backcountry Office Volunteer, while primarily responsible for assisting backcountry campers, will provide assistance to visitors coming into the office with a variety of questions and concerns.

While primarily an office-based position, there may be opportunities for work in the field. Physical demands may vary depending on the situation.

Duties

Serve as a front-line representative for the NPS. Provide current and accurate information and excellent customer service to visitors concerning the NPS area and other surrounding areas of interest. Explain the area’s recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, wilderness/backcountry permits, concession operated facilities and services, campground availability, hiking trails, etc. Distribute maps, brochures, and other printed material,

inform visitors of potential safety hazards, and provide directions and routes of travel.

Ability to deal effectively with a high volume of personal contacts, and provide excellent customer service.

Ability to communicate effectively in order to present information in easy-to-understand

formats that increase understanding of NPS programs, policies, and objectives.

Use automated reservation systems to process routine, simple payments, transactions, and reservations for backcountry permits. Issuing (selling) fishing permits and boating permits.

Explain rules and regulations to reservation holders and disseminate park information.

Research and review backcountry/wilderness permit applications and process reservations, permits,

and fees in accordance with established guidelines.

Process routine backcountry/wilderness reservations, permits, and fees in accordance with clearly established guidelines.

Utilize fee program related technologies and equipment that include hardware, software, and

peripheral devices such as computers, POS equipment, mobile phones,

scanning devices, and reservation systems in accordance with established guidelines.

Scope and Effect

Work contributes to the preservation of Yellowstone National Park’s natural resources and the enhancement of the visitor experience through communication of accurate information.

QUALIFICATIONS

The knowledge, skills and abilities needed are:

· Knowledge of backcountry, camping and related policies, procedures, and regulations.

· Ability to work independently with little or no supervision for extended periods of time.

· Ability to maintain a positive attitude and consistently be courteous and polite to visitors.

· Basic knowledge and understanding of the National Park Service and Yellowstone National Park.

· Ability to learn quickly and retain basic knowledge.

· Skill at oral communication and tactful discussion of controversial subject matter.
