DESCRIPTION:

Volunteers wanted that love to make a difference and help manage your public lands.

Are you interested in working with people and enjoying the outdoors? Do you like working within a short drive of good restaurants and local shopping? Then this position could be perfect for you. The Croatan National Forest is looking for one couple to help manage the Forest. Volunteers will be asked to provide assistance to Forest visitors and set the standard for appearance and rule compliance for visitors to the National Forest. We ask that the host campsite and camping unit be neat, in good repair and appearance, have current registration, inspection, and insurance and be able to provide proof if asked. Hours required are limited to the time it takes to complete the work assigned with at least two days off per week. The National Forest is open year-round and doesn’t have a bad winter. Host will be provided a campsite with a 110, 30, and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer connection. Host will also receive a $100 stipend per couple and mileage for anywhere around the forest we ask you to drive and help out unless we have a government vehicle available for you to use. Training will be offered for zero turn mower and any equipment required to use for completing work. Background check must be complete before starting work and direct deposit is required for stipend.

 

DUTIES

1.     Assisting visitors in understanding campground and Day Use Area regulations in a friendly and courteous manner.

2.     Picking up trash and moving full trash bags from trash receptacles to dumpster.

3.     Observing visitor behavior and reporting disruptive or inappropriate behavior to the proper authority. The volunteer should only provide assistance by explanation of rules and regulations. Belligerent or abusive visitors should be reported to the proper authorities immediately.

4.     Observing the condition and cleanliness of Campground and Day Use facilities, restocking toilet paper, and removing any debris/trash from floors, benches, sinks, stalls, and trash bins.

5.     Assisting the campground staff with campsites, fire rings, and grills that need to be cleaned after visitors leave. Fire ring and grill ash will not be placed into dumpsters unless there is no heat detected to prevent fires. Ash can be cooled using water and stirring until it is a manageable temperature.

6.     Assisting any campground with campsite Reservations from Reserve America that must be posted/updated every day or as needed.

7.     Helping create a presence in the campground that should be as close to 7-day coverage as possible, coordinating days/time off with adjoining host(s) or District staff.

8.     Mowing and weed eating will be performed as needed to maintain grass height no more than 4-6 inches, including around signs, trees, and tables.

9.     Liter along trails adjoining campground will be removed at least twice a month.

10. If possible, helping paint Land Line throughout the Forest to maintain our Forest Boundaries (involves walking along the forest and refreshing red paint on trees)

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills preferred in the area of Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, use of hand tools and power tools, but most of all we are looking for skills dealing with people. Any skills using a GPs will also be a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Campground and Day Use area located near the town of New Port, NC and administered by the USDA Forest Service. Croatan National Forest is over 160,000 acres and over 66 miles of trails. Campsites contain a picnic table, fire ring, and some have an electrical connection.
