Stovepipe Wells Campground:
This 190-site campground is located near the middle of Death Valley National Park, in Stovepipe Wells Village. There is no park staff on site at this first-come, first-serve campground, but there is a Ranger Station within walking distance that is typically open daily. Most cell phone carriers work in the Stovepipe Wells area but data use can be slow during high periods of visitation. There are some amenities located within walking distance of the campground including restaurants, general store, gas station, and pool. WIFI is not provided but hosts can pay for internet access at the nearby resort. The closest full sized grocery store, pharmacy, and medical services is located 88 miles away in Pahrump, NV. General Position Description:
Campground Hosts work on a team with other volunteers and NPS staff to provide excellent customer service, ensure positive experiences for visitors, and successfully manage the campground. Camp hosts reside in their own RV/Trailer and are responsible for greeting visitors and helping guests solve problems in a friendly and professional manner. Wearing the National Park Service Volunteer uniform and keeping a neat appearance while on duty is required. Camp hosts must be dependable, punctual, self-motivated, detail-oriented, courteous, respectful, and flexible in a dynamic work environment. Walking between 1 and 5 miles a day is required to perform campground rounds in all kinds of weather. Hosts work 32 – 40 hours each week, often during the busy holidays or weekends. No fee collection is required. A minimum of 3 months commitment is preferred. Training and orientation are provided at the start of the position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Check for compliance in morning, noon, and evening.
- Maintain site statistics and turn in each month.
- Maintain time sheet and turn in each month.
- Hang warning tags or educate visitors about violations as necessary.
- Remove expired tags from site posts.
- Announce over radio when campground is full.
- Call in emergency maintenance issues when necessary.
- Call law enforcement or emergency medical staff when necessary.
- Alert staff of unsafe conditions or maintenance issues so work orders can be submitted.
- Answer questions about park information, directions, and orientation.
- Update bulletin boards with up-to-date signage.
- Inform visitors about potential hazards.
- Work in a variable climate that can include strong winds, rain, snow, intense heat.
- Roving the campground several times a day on foot, walking on paved or uneven surfaces for up to 5 miles a day.
- Perform light maintenance:
- Empty fire rings of ash and/or debris.
- Pick up trash in the campground and surrounding areas.
- Move picnic tables with the assistance of other staff or volunteers.
- Set up caution barriers as needed.
- Stock restrooms with supplies as needed.
- Disinfect fee machines in campground.
Compensation:
The selected candidate will be offered a full hookup site (water, sewer, and electricity) in the Stovepipe Wells Village, within walking distance of the campground. Hosts also enjoy free laundry facilities at Cow Creek (approx. 22 miles East), reimbursement for propane use, and use of employee pool area. Volunteers who work a minimum of 250 hours qualify for a free Interagency annual pass.
