Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site
Volunteer
Job Description
LOCATION: Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site
DATES:
Needed From September 1, 2023
Needed To October 31, 2023
Become an interpretive park host or volunteer at Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site!!
This historical landmark in the beautiful John Day Valley is located near the Strawberry Mountains Wilderness. Here you will find opportunities for fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking and exploring other nearby historic sites.
Kam Wah Chung’s historic building and Interpretive Center tell the story of the Chinese immigrants’ experience in the John Day’s Chinatown, a story of hardship, perseverance and success. We would like you to join us in telling this amazing story.
We are looking for enthusiastic, visitor-oriented hosts or volunteers willing to conduct tours, and/or staff the front desk of the Interpretive Center; training provided. Hosts conducting tours will work with staff and conduct 45-minute tours on a rotating schedule. This position does require being on your feet for an extended time. Ideal position for a host couple!
Two full-hookup, partly shaded host sites adjacent to Canyon Creek are located between the Interpretive Center and Museum. Both sites are 15 feet wide and can accommodate any length. Sites are back-in and share a common outdoor area with two picnic tables. Onsite washer and dryer. Sites are also within walking distance of restaurants, grocery stores, drug store, post office, and fine antique stores. There are also hiking, fishing, and a multitude of other outdoor recreational opportunities around the John Day area.
Host duties include: conducting tours, greeting visitors at the front desk, selling gift shop items, light cleaning of the Interpretive Center and historic building and other tasks as needed. Hosts are not required to clean the restrooms. Your weekly work schedule will be three or four days on, from 8:50 am to 5:10 pm, with an hour off for lunch, and three days off, breaks between tours. You may work alongside other hosts if we are fortunate to have two hosts in a month with a reduced work schedule of three days on, three off. The schedule may change due to staff needs, but hours volunteered will still be maintained up to a max of 28 hours per week, unless arrangements are made for longer or shorter hours in advance.
We prefer a two-month commitment but will accept one month; let us know!
