You will have the opportunity to meet new people from across America and around the world, and to excite them about the unique and fragile Arctic environment. Join us for an unforgettable summer in the Alaska’s far north! Opportunity Description: The Campground Host at 5 mile/ Marion Creek. Assist at the Yukon River Contact Station two days a week. The on-site presence in the operation at Marion Creek and 5 Mile Campground and can make as many as 9,000 visitor contacts per summer. The volunteer must be able to work without direct, on-site supervision in primitive living conditions in a remote setting. Position can be an individual or couple. RV or trailer needed. Duties include: Monitoring visitor use and collecting data, greeting Dalton Highway travelers and providing travel/recreation information for the region Assisting visitor with registration, explaining campground policies, monitoring fee program, and providing travel and recreation planning information Helping with day to day operation of the campground, including janitorial, maintenance, repair, and littler patrols Reporting maintenance needs, campground disturbances, and emergencies to BLM staff Working on special projects which may include trail inventory, assisting with visitor surveys, photography, or other projects depending upon the district’s needs and the volunteer’s skills and goals The Campground Host will also assist at the Yukon River Contact Station and Arctic Interagency Visitor Center. The position requires a strong volunteer commitment. Volunteers should enjoy meeting and interacting with people and providing them with information. They must be interested in learning about Alaska, and willing to accept new challenges. It is also helpful (but not required) to have experience in campground hosting or visitor services. We need your service from mid-May through mid-September or dates may be negotiable. May 9 – June 15 Five Mile Campground/ Yukon River Contact Station June 15 – Aug 1 Marion Creek Campground/ Arctic Interagency Visitor Center Aug 1 – Sept 19 Five Mile Campground/ Yukon River Contact Station Transportation & Expenses: A government vehicle will be available for business related use and re-supply trips to Fairbanks.
