DEPT: Forest Service

AVAILABILITY: 4/1/2020–11/1/2020

RV INFORMATION: Trailer/RV Pads

DESCRIPTION

Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Trail/Campground Maintenance Photo Courtesy of FS DescriptionThis position will service the east side Huachuca Mountain Recreation sites such as Reef Townsite campground, Ramsey Vista campground, Brown Canyon Ranch day use area, Carr Canyon day use areas, Miller Canyon Trail heads, Hunter canyon (general forest area), and Ash Canyon (general forest area).  Minimum of 24 volunteer hours a week is expected for this position.  General duties include restroom maintenance, campground maintenance, public contacts, and updating visitor information boards.  Host must be able to handle garbage bags and clean restrooms.  While host will not handle fees, volunteer would be expected to restock fee envelopes at pay stations.  String trimming grass/weeds around facilities, recreation sites, trails and trail heads is commonly needed.  The Carr House “host pad,” where one would park their RV, is located away from our campgrounds and day use sites.  Carr House is a Forest Service administrative site that has a small volunteer operated Visitor Center.  You are not expected to have any participation in the actives at the Visitor Center.  Carr House visitor center is only open on Saturday and Sunday from 8-4:30, and is a fairly quiet location.  We offer full hook-ups (electric, water, septic and provide propane) at this site.  We also provide a Forest Service vehicle so long as you can obtain a Forest Service Drivers License.  Also at this location is a small workshop area that has extra room for your use.  Laundry machines are provided, as well as an additional stand up refrigerator/freezer.   This host site is located in Carr Canyon and is situated at about 5,500’ elevation.  Due to the elevation and tree cover, this site has the added benefit of being much cooler in the summer when compared to the surrounding areas.  For example Tucson and Phoenix are located at about 2,000’ and 1,000’ respectively.  The neighboring city of Sierra Vista offers many big box stores, restaurants and services you would expect to find in any city.  The City of Sierra Vista’s elevation is approximately 4,600’.  The Huachuca Mountains range from 4,600’-9,466’ with about 150 miles of trails on the district.  Miller Peak Wilderness located within the Huachuca Mountains is about 20,000 acres.  On the western side of the District, we also have Parker Canyon Lake, a 125 acre lake that is very popular in the summer.
