It damages park resources and enables other visitors to leave a trace. The Graffiti Removal and Intervention Team (GRIT) works to remove graffiti throughout the park. GRIT Captains performing water-based graffiti removal participate in graffiti clean-up operations park-wide working with other volunteers as a team lead. The GRIT Captain works with an NPS staff member to operate NPS vessels and lead the teams on 4-5 day work weeks. Surveys may be done to find and record new and old graffiti around Glen Canyon.  Duties: Operate a 55′ houseboat and/or its runabout vessel which can be up to 28′ in length. Live on the True GRIT houseboat for 5 days and 4 nights. Lead other volunteers on GRIT trips, collect daily statistics of removed graffiti, and report to the GRIT coordinator. Work in a team setting by facilitating discussions on safety, daily schedules, and work plans. Anchor the houseboat to NPS standards and delegate duties to other volunteers. May train new GRIT volunteers on graffiti removal procedures. Conduct graffiti surveys 1-2 times during the GRIT workweek. Hike up to 6 hours per day over uneven terrain.  Qualifications: Volunteers will receive training on graffiti removal prior to the start of work. GRIT Captains must take the DOI-MOCC (motorboat operators certification course) and be certified on the appropriate size vessel. DOI-MOCC training is also provided prior to start of work.  Physical Requirements and Potential Discomforts: Volunteers must be able to use small tools (scrub and wire brushes, scrapers, hammer, chisel) and perform moderate labor for up to 3 hours at a time in an outdoor environment, at least twice a day, for five consecutive days. Work requires kneeling on hard rock surfaces, bending and stooping, kneeling on and walking over uneven terrain in sand and rock, and climbing off and on boats. Survey work is generally conducted 1-2 times during a GRIT workweek and requires participants to hike up to 6 hours a day over uneven terrain.   HOUSING & AMENITIESType: OtherDescription: Volunteers will stay on the True GRIT houseboat.
