Would you like working closely with a small team and engaging visitors in a variety of settings, including outdoors and at an information desk? Do you have 2 months or more to give to a fabulous park? Consider joining our team! Volunteers in this position will serve under the division of Interpretation and Education in the Mather District of Yosemite National Park. Yosemite National Park is world-famous for its granite cliffs and domes, waterfalls, and majestic groves of Giant Sequoias. The National Park Service is responsible for managing the natural and cultural resources of the park for the enjoyment of this and future generations. Volunteers in this position will serve under the division of Interpretation and Education. Your responsibilities include ensuring the public has a safe and enjoyable experience and facilitating intellectual and emotional connections inherent in the park resources. Whether helping a visitor choose a hike, sharing the wonders of the Tuolumne and Merced groves of Sequoias, or educating campers about bear protection, you will make a big difference here at Yosemite National Park! This position is for the Mather District: located in the western-central part of the park and includes areas such as Hodgdon Meadows, Crane Flat, White Wolf, the Merced and Tuolumne Groves, and the western stretch of Highway120/Tioga Road. Outdoor recreational opportunities are essentially endless. Work Schedule: Four 8-hour days per week (32 hours) unless other arrangements are made (minimum 32 hours per week for housing). May be scheduled on weekends/holidays. Preferably able to work 3 – 4.5 months between May 10 and October 15th, with preference given to applicants who can commit to June – September. Those interested in working a shorter time may be considered. Work Location/Primary Duty Station: Mather District: Big Oak Flat Information Station / Hodgdon Meadow area. This area of the park is desired by some since it is quieter than Yosemite Valley and has easy access to Tuolumne Meadows and the Yosemite backcountry. Also, it is near the small town of Groveland. Description of Duties: 1. Provides information, orientation and informal interpretation while working at the Big Oak Flat Information Station. 2. Works closely as a team with other NPS staff and volunteers to provide high-quality visitor services. 3. Provides information, orientation and informal interpretation while roving in the Tuolumne Grove of Sequoias, Merced Grove of Sequoias, various trail roves and the campgrounds. 4. Is aware of and maintains personal and visitor safety. 5. Drives government and personal vehicle to accomplish duties. Knowledge of Yosemite is helpful. Training will be provided. 4. Strong interpersonal skills, especially teamwork and flexibility. 5. Professional appearance. 6. Valid Driver’s License and clear driving record. 7. Physical ability to stand or walk for up to 8 hours a day including hike up to 5 miles over steep and uneven terrain. 8. Provide own camping gear.
