Together, Redwood National and State Parks manages 133,000 acres to preserve, protect, and make available to all people, for their inspiration, enjoyment, and education, the forests, scenic coastlines, prairies, and streams and their associated natural and cultural values, which define this World Heritage Site; and to help people forge emotional, intellectual, and recreational ties to these parks. Opportunity Featured Summary: Redwood National and State Parks seeks a full-time Volunteer/Intern to assist with operating the Wolf Creek Outdoor School, conducting curriculum based programs created for 4th through 6th grade students, conduct hiking roves on park trails, assist with ranger-led interpretation and education programming as scheduled, and occasionally assist at the Kuchel Visitor Center. Throughout the spring and early summer this full-time Volunteer/Intern will work for the Division of Interpretation and Education. Description of Duties: Redwood National and State Parks is seeking a full-time Interpretation Volunteer/Intern for the Division of Interpretation, Education, and Partnerships. The volunteer will assist in the operation of Redwood National and State Parks’ Wolf Creek Outdoor School. Duties include conducting curriculum based programs created for 4th through 6th grade students through old-growth redwood forests, providing information, and/or interpretation about the parks to diverse visitors in person and by telephone; handling cash and credit transactions for cooperating association (Redwood Parks Conservancy) merchandise; performing daily visitor center opening/closing and accounting; and, conducting park roves to gather information about park resources and conditions, and to provide informal contacts with visitors. In addition, the volunteer/intern will have the opportunity to assist with interpretive and educational programming including ranger-led forest walks through iconic redwood groves, junior ranger program, roving park trails, and more. Applicants must be able to repeatedly lift loads of 50 lb. and have sure footing on uneven and slick surfaces. The ideal candidates for this position are outgoing individuals with strong communication skills and an attention to detail. Volunteers must possess a teaching background or experience working with children. Time Commitment The ideal candidate would be available from August 2019 – November 2019, though dates may be negotiable for the right candidate. The volunteer/intern will volunteer 40 hours/week (5, 8-hour days) in order to qualify for free park. Legal: The selected volunteer must pass a federal background check. Knowledge/Skills Desired: Teaching background or experience working with children in organizations such as scouting, camp counseling or other community programs. Must represent the highest standards of professional behavior including dress, punctuality, visitor contacts, and interpersonal relationships. Previous experience (and enjoys) working with diverse people. Ability to work safely in a variety of environments, including those encountered in the parks such as rugged coastlines and dense old-growth redwood forests. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse park visitors and park personnel. Ability to be calm and courteous during frequently busy work conditions and in emergency situations. Valid driver’s license. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended as park housing is remote, most services and shopping are located several miles from park housing and workplaces, and no suitable public transportation may be available.
