DESCRIPTION
Volunteer Activities• Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information DescriptionALL ABOARD for a Unique Volunteer Opportunity! The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park is part of an exciting program onboard Amtrak’s Capitol Limited between Cumberland, Maryland, and Washington, DC. This route runs through the Potomac River valley parallel to the historic C & O Canal and through the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Trails & Rails volunteers must be able to lift 35 lbs, climb stairs, move through narrow spaces, and work long days. Volunteers work in teams of two, boarding the train in Cumberland in the morning around 9:15 a.m. and returning there about 7:30 p.m. at night. While on the train, volunteers will provide narration and information to passengers about the history of the canal, the railroad, the Civil War, nearby towns, and natural features along the route. Training is provided in the spring by Trails & Rails, NPS, and Amtrak staff. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity or would like to sign up as a volunteer, please contact Park Ranger Stephanie Siemek at the Cumberland Visitor Center by calling 301-491-2597, or via e-mail at stephanie_siemek@nps.gov. Please note: At this time, we only accept volunteers for the Trails & Rails program who are at least 18 years of age. HOUSING & AMENITIESNot Available
