Volunteer Activities• Construction/Maintenance • Other • Visitor Information • General Assistance • Weed/Invasive Species Control DescriptionGatehouse (Visitor Contact Station) Volunteers-Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula May 18th – August 3rd The Gatehouse Volunteers, located on the Schoodic Peninsula, in Winter Harbor, Maine as part of Acadia National Park will spend 70% of their time operating a small visitor contact station and 30% of their time assisting with a variety tasks from small construction projects, gardening, to roving and making visitor contacts. We are looking for residential volunteers who have their own RV, can commit to volunteering 32 hours a week(per individual volunteer) for the 2020 season. Main Duties: Operate a small visitor contact station, answering questions on facility amenities, trails, bike paths, the flora and fauna, as well as informing visitors of ranger and Schoodic Institute Programs that are available. Volunteer will act as first reponse to emergencies, utilizing radio, and phone to contact law enforcement. Position may involve long periods of sitting or standing. Proper use and maintenance of government property. Collateral Duties: Basic maintenance projects such as painting picnic tables, picking up trash, and weeding. Roving the trails, bike paths, and overlooks and interacting with visitors as a representative of the park and providing them with orientation and assistance to whatever questions they may have. Will assist with special events when needed. Work Schedule: The work week will consist of a minimum of 32 hours per week (per individual volunteer). The Gatehouse Volunteer will receive 3 midweek days off within a 7 day period. Weekend work is expected. *We can negotiate for special circumstances. Volunteer time sheets will be submitted monthly. Volunteer is required to wear a National Park Service volunteer uniform. Shirts, jacket, and a hat are provided by the park. Brown or khaki colored pants will be required. Qualifications: Experience working with the public. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good verbal communication skills. Valid driver’s license. Ability to walk out on hiking or biking paths. Benefits: Trailer pad with sewage and power. Park entrance pass for personal vehicle. The visitor contact station has a great view of the ocean.
