During your visits to the very popular rental cabins you will have the opportunity to explore the Bozeman District on the Custer Gallatin National Forest and serve the American public while preserving our shared history! The Bozeman Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest is seeking motivated volunteers who enjoy working and recreating outdoors, talking with the public, and who wish be an essential part of a friendly and supportive Recreation Management team. The Forest Service will provide a free RV pad with hookups (water, sewer, electric, and propane) for our hosts. The host must provide their own RV trailer or motorhome. If you enjoy outdoor recreation and exploring our National Forests please join our team! As our Volunteer Cabin Hosts you would help the Bozeman Ranger District and the Custer Gallatin National Forest maintain, clean, and promote our historic cabins and help us educate the visiting public on our busy District. The Bozeman Ranger District was one of the first Forest Service Ranger Districts in the Nation to make the historic Forest Service guard stations available for rent to the public. The Ranger District, the Custer Gallatin National Forest, and Region One of the Forest Service take pride in our Historic Structures and invest time and skill into their preservation and maintenance. You would help preserve our American heritage for our future generations! These cabins are very popular and you would be an essential and respected part of the management team. Last year over 5,000 people visited our ten rental cabins. As our volunteers you would help the Forest Service provide an amazing recreation experience on our public lands! The 10 cabins you will help maintain are: Battle Ridge Cabin, Mystic Lake Cabin, Maxey Cabin, Window Rock Cabin, Fox Creek Cabin, Little Bear Cabin, Spanish Creek Cabin, Windy Pass Cabin, the rustic Yellow Mule Cabin, and the Garnet Mountain Fire Lookout. The Bozeman Ranger District, a portion of the Custer Gallatin National Forest, is located in southwest Montana. The Custer Gallatin National Forest forms the northern portion of the Greater Yellowstone Area which is the largest intact and protected ecosystem in the contiguous 48 states. Bozeman lies at the heart of the fly fishing world with the Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson, Yellowstone, and Missouri Rivers all within a 40 minute drive. Southwest Montana is beautiful and inspirational! The Bozeman area and Southwest Montana are a world famous recreation destination. We have wide valleys and a big sky with warm (but not too hot) Northern Rocky Mountain summers. That said, you must be prepared for snow in June and in late September. Bozeman is 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park and is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges. Come discover and explore the area. Volunteer Responsibilities: The Volunteer Cabin Hosts are expected to provide exceptional public service and welcome visitors to the Bozeman Ranger District, our rental cabins, and the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Volunteers will positively represent the United States Forest Service during their interactions with the visiting public. Volunteers are expected to treat our visitors, agency partners, other volunteers, and Forest Service employees with respect. Cabin Maintenance Volunteers will regularly visit the cabins, perform a cabin condition checklist, and complete basic duties such as cleaning, vacuuming, sweeping, and some basic grounds maintenance including litter pickup and cleaning out fire rings. Volunteers will assist trained Forest Service staff with the historic preservation of the cabins performing basic carpentry, historic preservation, and landscaping. Volunteer Recreation Hosts are expected to promote the appropriate uses of and activities on National Forests. The duties will also include updating information signs, promoting dispersed camping etiquette and rules, reminding visitors of the Food Storage Order, and to be aware of bears. Volunteers will keep accurate notes and will communicate all conflicts, cabin issues, and problem areas to Forest Service employees for follow-up. Volunteers will not perform any law enforcement duties. Duties will also include cleaning of outhouses. Volunteers should be available at least four days per week. Volunteers will be expected to drive to the cabins safely and independently. A Forest Service vehicle and two way radio are provided. Couples are preferred. Volunteers will live at a secure work station south of Bozeman near Highway 191 at Storm Castle canyon. We are flexible with schedules. Join our supportive and experienced Recreation Management team as a volunteer Cabin and Recreation Host! Volunteers will be provided basic safety training and the necessary supplies, and must prioritize their own safety and health. Cabin Maintenance and Recreation Hosts will assist the Forest Service in providing those expectations to National Forest visitors. Volunteers should be able to bend over, lift up to 20 pounds, and walk confidently over uneven ground. Hosts will be provided a Forest Service vehicle, a two way radio, and must have a valid driver’s license. Volunteers must be able to use basic hand tools, and will use other tools such as rakes, brooms, pruners, shovels, and power tools such as a gas generator, powered screw drivers, and a weed-eater. The Ranger would like hosts to serve throughout the season which begins around May 25th and runs through September 30th, 2020.
