The Bozeman Ranger District, Custer Gallatin National Forest, in Bozeman, Montana is seeking motivated volunteer Campground Hosts at Battle Ridge Campground. If enjoy public service and outdoor recreation, talking with the public, and wish be a crucial member of an experienced and supportive Recreation Management team this is the opportunity for you! The Battle Ridge Campground rests on the north side of the beautiful Bridger Mountains north of amazing Bozeman, Montana. If you enjoy recreation and want to experience the Rocky Mountains in summer, please join us! The popular Battle Ridge Campground, elevation 6,500 feet, is located a quick 23 miles north of Bozeman via MT Hwy 86. The campground has 12 sites. Battle Ridge Campground lies just across the road from the Battle Ridge Trailhead which offers an exceptional ATV/OHV/Motorcycle/Mountain Bike trail system that tours the north side of the Bridger Mountains. Located just up the road from the Battle Ridge Campground is the Fairy Lake Recreation Area which includes a small campground, a day use and picnic area, and two trailheads. Fairy Lake is a popular destination for residents and visitors to Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley. Visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, and swimming (despite its 7,557ft elevation). The Sacagawea Trailhead accesses the three tallest peaks in the Bridger Mountain Range. In the fall, the Bridger Mountains host the largest known concentration of migrating Golden Eagles as well as many other raptor species. Recreation opportunities around Bozeman and southwest Montana are virtually limitless. Bozeman is less than two hours from Yellowstone National Park. Host Responsibilities: The campground host is expected to provide exceptional public service by greeting and welcoming visitors to their public land and encouraging a positive and rewarding experience during their visit to the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Volunteers will professionally represent the United States Forest Service. Volunteer Campground Hosts are expected to positively and respectfully interact with the visiting public, and our partners, other volunteers, and Forest Service employees. The campground hosts are expected to perform the daily cleaning of the campground facilities which include cleaning the outhouses, cleaning out the fire rings, and picking up litter. Hosts may assist with annual maintenance, minor carpentry and landscaping activities. Hosts are expected to help monitor this campground. With respect to that, Campground Hosts will keep accurate logs of the vehicles and campers and will remind visitors of the campground rules such as keeping campsites clean, leashing pets, and the maximum number of nights a camper may stay. Hosts will remind visitors of the proper uses and activities on National Forests. Campground Hosts will communicate visitor conflicts or campground issues to Forest Service staff and will not perform any law enforcement activities. The hosts will monitor a nearby dispersed recreation area and will communicate any issues to District staff. The campground host will perform daily positive educational interactions throughout the campground and help the Forest Service by reminding campers and visitors about the Food Storage Order and bear awareness. If you have the motivation, an ATV, and the necessary skills, we may include OHV duties in the volunteer position. Campground hosts are expected to be on site five days a week, usually Thursday through Monday with at least two scheduled days off (which are typically Tuesday and Wednesday). We are flexible with the schedule and we adamantly encourage our volunteers to enjoy the amazing location and beautiful area. The Battle Ridge Campground hosts will be an invaluable part of a supportive and experienced Recreation Management team and you would significantly contribute to the conservation of America’s natural resources. Hosts will be provided basic safety training and supplies. Hosts must prioritize their own safety and health. The Campground Hosts will assist the Forest Service in providing those same expectations to National Forest visitors. A host should be able to bend over, lift up to 20 pounds, and walk confidently over uneven ground. Hosts will be provided and use tools such as rakes, brooms, pruners, shovels, and power tools (such as a weed eater). Hosts will be provided a two way radio. The Forest Service provides a free RV pad for our hosts (sewer connection, water, propane). Hosts must provide their own RV (motorhome, trailer, or camper). Please, no tents as your primary residence. The host RV pad & campsite site can accommodate up to a 40-foot RV and towing vehicle (if your RV is larger please give us a call….let’s talk). There is no other housing available for this opportunity. A fuel reimbursement will be provided for your personal vehicle, a generator, and, potentially your ATV if you have one and we authorize its use in this opportunity. Water, exclusively for the hosts to use, will be provided by the Forest Service in a portable cistern (there is no water supply in the campground). Solar and gasoline generators are provided at no cost to the volunteers. There is limited cell phone service nearby (depending on the cell phone service provider). The Ranger District would like hosts to serve from May 25th through September 30th of 2020.
