RV INFORMATION: Trailer/RV PadsDescription: Hosts must provide their own RV or camp trailer in which to live. RV sites are provided on the nearby Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge, approximately 10 miles away. The site includes electricity and water. Pets may be permitted on a case by case basis but have to be approved ahead of time and must be on leash. Also, ATVs, UTVs, and motorcycles have to stay on existing roads and trails. The FWS can cover some mileage costs for travel to the RV site at the beginning and end of the season. The post office is located in Charlo, where hosts can either pay for PO Box or can have mail delivered to the office. Volunteering for the FWS provides a great service to the public, and most volunteers find the experience rewarding. Volunteer Activities• Trail/Campground Maintenance • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information • Fish/Wildlife Photo Courtesy of FWS Description This position is for volunteer assistance in greeting visitors at the Visitor Center for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Bison Range, Moiese, Montana. The 18,766-acre National Bison Range, established in 1908, is located in the beautiful Mission Valley of Montana, just two hours south of Glacier National Park. The National Bison Range is a wonderful refuge with expansive vistas, native wildflowers, and abundant wildlife. The refuge is home to its namesake, the plains bison, as well as elk, deer, pronghorn, big horn sheep, bears, abundant and diverse birds and many other wildlife species. The Refuge is open daily year-round from dawn to dusk. The Visitor Center is open Thursday-Monday from 9am – 5pm. There are Scenic Drives, Nature Walks, Fishing Access and a Day Use Area. General duties: The main duty is staffing the front information desk to serve as the primary contact for visitors. Volunteers will help tailor the visitor experience by sharing things like “real time” Refuge information, interesting facts about this area, the mission and goals of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and advising visitors of safety regulations. Volunteers may greet hundreds of visitors that stop to interact with staff, pay entrance fees, purchase day use or annual passes, and browse the interpretive displays. Volunteers will also spend time familiarizing themselves with the refuge resources (roads, signs, interpretive trails, areas of interest), and assisting other staff with interpretive programs which occur periodically. Volunteers will also assist with the upkeep and cleanliness of facilities provided for the sole benefit of Refuge visitors, including bathrooms, trails, pit toilets, day use areas, viewing areas, and parking areas, so they are appropriately presentable. Volunteers must be physically capable of performing these duties. Season, Schedule, and Utilities: We are seeking up to two volunteers that are available from May 6 through June 7th. Typically, volunteers work 4 days a week, 8hrs/day including weekends and holidays.
