Volunteer Activities• Office/Clerical • Other • Visitor Information DescriptionIntroduction As a fee collection volunteer, the individual’s primary responsibility is to collect and account for fees in accordance with established guidelines. The volunteer will serve as a front-line representative of the National Park Service. A favorable background investigation is preferred. This announcement will be used to fill positions on Hatteras Island.  A minimum 8-week commitment is required to justify the background investigation process. Major Duties Actively participate in a safe workplace culture. Collect appropriate fees following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Operate an electronic cash register, computer, or point of sales system. Ensures that funds are processed in a safe, secure, and accountable manner. Issue entrance receipts, park passes, and federal recreation passes. Verify entrance receipts and various passes for validity dates. Process refunds or upgrades as needed according to established guidelines. Inform and educate visitors on park and camping regulations. Provide visitors with local, regional, and park information. Distribute maps, brochures, and other printed material. Inform visitors of potential safety hazards. Provide directions and routes of travel throughout the Outer Banks. Performs minor maintenance duties to ensure a clean, safe work area. Other Duties Assist with remits, when needed. Assist with the mailing of ORV permits, when needed. Complete shift reports to verify money collected, accountable stock sold, and all machine transactions from the shift using journal and receipt tapes and a register of voided transactions. Perform campground duties, such as collecting fees, monitoring campground self-registration collection activities, checking site availability, duties associated with the national campground reservation service and conducting compliance checks of campground users to ensure proper payment of fees. Perform traffic control at park entrance and/or related locations, when needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Must be at least 21 years of age. Favorable background investigation. Surety bond secured by the park in the volunteer’s name. Knowledge and skill in the accountable handling of cash, checks, and credit cards. Ability to accurately complete standard mathematical calculations, and make change under stressful conditions. Ability to operate an electronic cash register, point of sales system, credit card machine, calculator, and computer. Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and as part of a team. Ability to communicate effectively and deal with a high volume of personal contacts. Enjoy talking with and meeting people. Have a professional and courteous demeanor. Previous experience is desirable but not a requirement. Physical Demands Sitting, standing, bending, or walking for extended periods of time. Work Environment The work may be outdoors at the campground or may be indoors at the lighthouse fee booth and/or Off Road Permit Office. Outer Banks weather is notoriously unpredictable and can change quickly. The Seashore is also home to a number of insects including biting flies, chiggers, mosquitos, sand gnats, and ticks. Work Schedule Work schedules will be coordinated with the volunteer supervisor. Work may including holidays and weekends. Volunteer will notify the volunteer supervisor of planned absences within a reasonable amount of time, usually not less than one week, or as soon as possible when the volunteer cannot be available to perform scheduled duties due to sickness or other reasons. Uniform While on duty, the volunteer will wear a NPS volunteer shirt and name tag (provided). A ball cap will be also provided for outdoor use. The volunteer will supply his/her own khaki pants, brown belt, and brown shoes. The volunteer should look professional at all times and follow the Outer Banks Group’s volunteer uniform policy. Government Vehicles / Personal Equipment The volunteer may only drive a government vehicle if indicated on the Volunteer Services Agreement (Form 301A). The volunteer must possess a valid state driver’s license and have it checked by a government official (supervisor.) Volunteer may not use government vehicles for any reason without prior approval from his/her direct supervisor. Personal equipment will not be used. Housing An RV pad for hookups or housing is provided in exchange of 32 hours per week of volunteer service.  Reimbursement Volunteer will not be reimbursed for expenses.  ***Please provide three professional references when applying.*** HOUSING & AMENITIESType: Trailer/RV PadsDescription: An RV site with full hookups or housing will be provided in exchange for 32 hours/week.
