Volunteer Activities• Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information Photo Courtesy of NPS DescriptionPark interpreters are the public face of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Interns, with support from experienced staff members, are responsible for researching, preparing, and presenting a range of interpretive programs, including guided hikes, and interpretive talks, on the park’s interpretive themes (e.g., wildlife, geology, ecology, and human history). These programs are given in a variety of park locations such as campgrounds, trails, visitor centers and Roosevelt’s cabin. In addition, interns assist visitor centers and provide information and orientation to visitors. Interns receive over 80 hours of formal training in interpretive skills, customer service, safety, and natural and cultural resources and park operations. Additional training and professional development opportunities are also available. If you love learning, sharing what you’ve learned with others, and working hard in a team environment, these positions prove to be incredibly rewarding. This internship program is supported by the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association. Required Skills & Interest Applicants must be college graduates or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with a background or coursework in a related field. Public speaking and presentation skills and abilities; interest and/or knowledge in natural and/or cultural history; skills in using computers; ability to work independently and live in a remote area; valid driver’s license. Internship Dates Interns work 40 hours per week with two consecutive days off. Summer internships run from approximately May 10 to August 15, 2020. Beginning and ending date may flexible. Unofficial college transcripts encouraged. Position Locations Two positions are located in the South Unit and one in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Internships will be based out of Medora or the Watford City area. Desired Skills & Interest Background in interpretation environmental education, biology, geology, history, or related fields; experience working with the public. Reimbursement of expenses Interns are reimbursed for living expenses at the rate of $100 per week. A travel allowance provided. The park provides housing, name tags, and uniform shirts.
