The purpose of this volunteer position is to provide assistance at Buck Hall campground and day-use areas on the Francis Marion and contribute to a positive experience for our visitors. As a host, you are the “face” of the Forest Service providing customer service to visitors and campers. This position serves to support Recreation staff on resource management projects. . Volunteers work under the supervision of the Natural Resource Specialist and recreation staff.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
• Knowledge of specific campground and Day Use rules and regulations governing the use of the resource (i.e., fees, length of stay, alcohol prohibitions). This should also include general forest and community information.
• Host must work well with people, be personable, neat in appearance, and behave in a manner appropriate to the workplace. • Basic written and oral communications skills.
• Ability to practice safety in all aspects of the job.
• Knowledge of general forest and community information.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
● Visit campers at their site on an “as needed” basis. Direct campers to campground kiosk area rules and information to all new campers and area users. Go over rules with campers in the event deficiencies are noticed throughout the stay.
● Clean and service restrooms. Restrooms will need to be checked more than once during heavy weekend and holiday use. Each bathroom should have an adequate supply of toilet paper, trash bags, soap, etc.
● Post reservations for pavilion when rented.
● Clean/prepare day use pavilion area when rented out for guest.
● Pick up trash along roadside.
● Report needs within the developed recreation area/campground and adjacent facilities to recreation tech/recreation staff/supervisor in a timely fashion.
● Check campsites when campers vacate the area to ensure safety and cleanliness for the next camper.
● Attend monthly safety meeting at the District Office (2nd Thursday of the month)
● Learn and use recreation.gov to track campsites that are booked/available (hosts do NOT collect fees from campers or visitors)
● Understand and follow specific rules related to campground use and occupancy as well as associated trail and day use activities. Provide firsthand customer service in developed recreation setting. Serve as Forest Service presence to oversee and monitor recreation/campground/camper conditions.
● Provide information to guests and serve as “Goodwill Host” to visitors of the national forest.
● Maintain a wholesome, respectable, and impartial presence to the public throughout the tenure as host. Host serves as a representative of the U.S. Forest Service. The Forest Service expects all its representatives to adhere to civic minded principles in their personal conduct and to exhibit a high degree of personal integrity. Acceptable conduct involves sincere respect for the rights and feelings of others and the assurance their personal conduct will not harm or be considered discriminatory to other volunteers, employees, or the Forest Service or cause an unfavorable reaction from the public.
Requested Time Commitment:
Volunteer must work 30 hours per week, Thursday through Sunday, from 7:00 am – 11:00 am and 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Please advise recreation staff if schedule needs to be changed, especially on weekends and holidays or shrimp baiting season where heavy use is expected
Housing:
Campground RV pad w/ full hook ups (water/electric/sewer)
