DATES: 5/20/2024 – 9/30/2024
DEPT: Forest Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Grayback Campground (2000’ elevation) is located 11 miles from Cave Junction, OR and 8 miles from Oregon Caves National Monument. This beautiful, forested campground has 39 first-come, first-served tent sites. It also has a day use area with picnic tables, amphitheater, and fire rings. The campground sits along Sucker Creek and has a 1-mile interpretive loop trail.
Hosts are provided a free campsite with water, sewer, and electrical hookups. Hosts must provide their own RV or travel trailer. The host sites can accommodate small RVs of 25 to 35 feet long. Hosts will be reimbursed for propane. There is no internet and little to no cell service at this campground. There is a landline available for local calls.
Campground hosts represent the US Forest Service and are often the first contact that visitors encounter on their vacation. As such campground hosts must be neat, professional, and friendly. Host(s) will assist visitors in registering for their campsite, inform visitors of campground rules and regulations, help visitors with any problems that may arise, record campground use statistics, and perform minor maintenance to keep the campground and its restroom facilities clean and safe. Hosts will perform water quality testing as well as report any concerns or issues to FS personnel in a timely manner. Across the street from Grayback Campground is Chinquapin Campground. It has one large group site available by reservation only. Campground hosts also help maintain the facilities at this group site.
Additional duties include checking for fee compliance, emptying fire rings, repairing signs, disposing of stray trash, cleaning restrooms, moving picnic tables, setting up “caution” barriers, and posting signs at message boards.
Host(s) volunteer approximately 30 hours per week, primarily over holidays and weekends. Host(s) should be comfortable being outside in all kinds of weather. They should also be physically capable of shoveling, raking, cleaning fire pits, and walking a couple miles a day. There are two host sites available at this campground. Ideally, both positions will be filled, and hosts will coordinate their schedules to best serve the campground and its visitors. Training will be provided by FS personnel.
