Job Description

We are seeking a reliable and customer-focused Camp Host to join our team and contribute to the overall positive experience of campers. As a Camp Host, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the campground, providing assistance to campers, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy the outdoors, possess excellent communication skills, and thrive in a customer service-oriented setting.

Sailors Campground is nestled along the banks of the Gulkana River. It is a popular destination for rafters, anglers, families, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Our campground is near to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, and guests often stop to camp here along their route to the park. This area also attracts local Alaskans looking to access the river for fishing and floating as there is a well-maintained boat launch on the premises.

This position is seasonal starting in May and ending in September. It is an hourly position and may require weekends, early mornings, and evenings. However, your time would be flexible. You will report to our permit and communication specialist located in Glennallen, Alaska. Your supervisor will check in weekly with site visits and be your main point of contact for resources and questions.

The pay rate for this position is $18.00/hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Welcoming Guests: Greet campers upon arrival, provide them with information about the campground rules and facilities, and ensure a friendly and hospitable atmosphere.
  • Customer Service: Address camper inquiries, resolve concerns, and provide assistance to enhance their overall camping experience. Issue permits relevant to land use activity for campers and river recreationists.
  • Campground Maintenance: Conduct routine checks of the campground to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with established guidelines. Report any maintenance or safety issues promptly.
  • Registration and Check-in: Assist with camper registrations, check-ins, and check-outs. Maintain accurate records of camper occupancy and payments.
  • Campground Security: Monitor the campground to ensure compliance, safety, and security of campers. Collaborate with relevant authorities in case of emergencies.
  • Information Dissemination: Provide information on local attractions, activities, and services to campers. Distribute maps, brochures, and other relevant materials.
  • Campfire Management: Enforce campfire regulations, provide firewood, and educate campers on safe campfire practices.
  • Trash Collection: Oversee and manage waste disposal, ensuring that campers adhere to proper waste disposal practices.
  • Bathrooms: Spot clean daily.
  • Document work hours and submit to Ahtna staff.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Recreational Vehicle (RV), camper trailer, truck camper or tent sufficient to house Host.
  • Minimum age: 21
  • Host orientation: May 2024. Time and Location TBD

We expect the person in this position to be an initiative-taker, capable of working independently or as a team member while accepting varied and changing responsibilities in the job. They will develop and sustain cooperative working relationships with Ahtna staff and the public to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to express the needs of Sailors Campground campers. They must exhibit strong time management and organizational skills to effectively schedule and prioritize daily workflow assignments to develop solutions for problem solving. The individual must also be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays all while maintaining a high level of confidentiality where expected. These are in addition to the Core Competencies listed in the Employee Handbook that all employees are expected to demonstrate.

 

Physical Demands

Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, and seeing (up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus); walking; bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for up to 4 hours; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.  Work primarily performed outdoors in a campground setting.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described in this job description are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this job. The employee will be working in and out of doors and prepared for changes in temperature, weather conditions and noise levels.
