We pride ourselves on offering excellent volunteer opportunities for individuals and couples. The Forest Service will provide supervision, mentorship, and training that will lead to valuable professional experience, which can be documented on future federal employment applications. We can work with your school to create internships to earn you college credit. The District holds an abundance of recreational opportunities such as hiking, world-class rock climbing, canoeing/kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. The town of Morehead is nearby (about 10 miles away) with many stores such as Walmart, Kroger, a hospital, etc. Larger cities of Winchester and Lexington are about 40-60 minutes away, with many more restaurants, shops, horse racing, and entertainment venues. Visitor Services/Interpretive Volunteers work alongside Forest Service employees and crews to care for the recreation facilities within the National Forest. As a member of the Cumberland District team, volunteers are expected to perform work and conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner with other workers and the public. Our volunteers receive formal, informal, and on-the-job training to help ready them for the duties they perform. These duties include but are not limited to: Greet visitors, answer phone calls, and provide visitors with recreation information at the District Office, referring non-routine questions to the proper staff member. Be interested in and familiar with the recreation amenities and opportunities throughout the district. Become acquainted with District staff and programs. Follow issues and activities occurring on the District, across the Daniel Boone National Forest, and within the agency that may help provide the public with needed information. Serve as Collection Officer to sell items as: National Forest maps, Recreation Fee passes, OHV passes, and Golden Age Passports in accordance with Forest Service Manual and Handbook requirements. (Volunteer is held accountable for the funds collected and must maintain accountability records as required.) Keep work area and visitor center tidy and presentable for the public, requiring duties such as, but not limited to: Keeping front sidewalk, porch and back deck clear of debris. Keeping brochure rack stocked and helping keep track of back stock. Wiping down countertops, dusting exhibits and other areas that accumulate dust/germs. May be asked to work on special projects or help with events such as, but not limited to: Planting and maintenance of native flower beds Monarch Restoration Bear Aware Fishing Derbies The following experience and skills are highly desirable, but not required, for this position: Background in customer/visitor services, office operations, computer/word processing, recreation or guide services, naturalist or interpretive programs, environmental education, etc. Volunteers receiving housing or the use of a campsite are required to serve a minimum of 24 hours per week (maximum of 80 hours per bi-weekly period). Required weekend work (recurring or on occasion depending on position and staffing levels). Please be advised that applications are pooled and filled as needed. All positions typically last from 6 to 12 months. Dates can be flexible to accommodate your schedule yet may require working weekends and holidays, (depending on position) as well as being present for employee training meetings/classes.
