JOB DESCRIPTION:
Fossil Butte National Monument is offering a volunteer opportunity for a maintenance worker for approximately three to five months (May through September 2024) to assist in completing seasonal tasks and projects while the weather is good enough to access the entirety of the park.
Projects will include repairing and rebuilding over 20 miles of fence line where you will be teamed up with another maintenance worker and will drive posts, stretch and secure barbed and smooth wire in accordance with the parks fencing standards. Some trail maintenance including re-establishing water bars, debris removal, resurfacing, and some brush cutting will be needed. There is also an opportunity for some plumbing and carpentry work well as vehicle and equipment maintenance.
This position requires a minimum of 32 hours per week between 7 am and 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. An RV spot with water, sewer, and electric hookups is provided. You must bring your own RV.
Fossil Butte National Monument preserves a portion of the sediments of 52-million-year-old Fossil Lake. The area is known for the abundance of well-preserved fossil fishes, insects, plants, birds, and more. The visitor center is the main attraction in the park and has over 2000 fossils on display.
