DEPT: Fish & Wildlife Service

JOB DESCRIPTION:

St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge is a 25,000-acre refuge along the Mississippi River that is renowned for its excellent birdwatching opportunities in every season. It was established in 1990 to provide inviolate sanctuary for waterfowl and migratory birds. Bayou Cocodrie NWR is a 15,000-acre refuge on the west side of Mississippi River established in 1991 to provide bottomland forest habitat for migratory birds. We are looking for a volunteer or two to help specifically with invasive tree removal and treatment.

DUTIES:

The major duties of the position will be to utilize a variety of methods to rid the refuge of problematic trees and standing dead trees. These include mostly tallowtree and willow, which overtake native desirable species in wildlife habitat management. Following strict safety protocols and after proper training/certification, the volunteer(s) may be assigned to use UTVs, canoes, kayaks, and trucks to haul away stems for disposal at a specified site. The work is strenuous and will require the ability to repeatedly exert force, lift, and carry over 50-100 lbs.

Other tasks may include clearing fallen limbs/logs from trails, keeping kiosks stocked with brochures, and miscellaneous duties as assigned by the refuge manager. Additional needs of the refuge include helping out in the maintenance shop, cleaning signs, sweeping, organizing and cleaning tools, small engine repairs, vehicle repairs/oil changes, painting, mopping, and other duties as assigned.

HOUSING:

With a minimum commitment of 24 hours per week for five weeks, per individual, housing is provided free of charge.

Option 1: Sheltered RV spot with full hookups including water, electric, and sewer, and a picnic table. Laundry facilities are available free of charge.

Option 2: Private sparsely-furnished 1br/ba house with one full-size bed, linens, all appliances incl. washer/dryer.

Option 3: Bedroom in shared house with one twin-sized bed, linens, all appliances incl. washer/dryer.

HOW TO APPLY:

Complete the volunteer.gov application. Also, please SEND AN EMAIL to the contact expressing our interest, your experience, your estimated start and end dates of availability, and how many hours you’re willing to volunteer.
