Volunteers greet visitors, answer questions and provide orientation to the Monuments and surrounding area. Volunteers present informal interpretation and rove trails. Work may entail operating a cash register for nonprofit bookstore sales and, depending on background, may assist with behind-the-scenes projects as well. Training will be provided with time to get to know the Monuments. This position requires periods of standing, various levels of walking/hiking, and raising and lowering the flag daily. Note: given the ongoing pandemic and that employee/VIP safety health, safety, and wellness are paramount, we are operating in a phased reopening environment (ie – some visitor services may not be offered). There is an RV space available for this opportunity. Shifts are 8 hours long and you will be working 32 hours a week. Reliable personal transportation and a valid drivers license are required. Please include whether or not you have a current federal background check and an active PIV (federal government ID) card. Area Information: The Flagstaff Area National Monuments are clustered around Flagstaff – the largest city in Northern Arizona at an elevation at approximately 7,000 ft and a diverse population of about 70,000. Flagstaff offers complete medical, dental and shopping services, along with excellent educational opportunities at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. Flagstaff is on the Colorado Plateau and the surrounding desert, mountains, and landscapes offer a wide range of world-class recreational opportunities. Wupatki is about 35 miles northeast (45 minute drive) of Flagstaff, Walnut Canyon is about 8 miles east, and Sunset Crater Volcano about 8 miles northeast of Flagstaff. Summers in Flagstaff are warm with temperatures in the 80s and frequent monsoon thunderstorms. Winters are cold, with low temperatures near zero and snow averaging around 90 inches.
