Join Our Team for the 2025 Season!
Fort Bowie National Historic Site is seeking dedicated volunteers to enhance our visitors’ experience at this significant historic military outpost. This is your opportunity to live and work at a site that played a pivotal role in the U.S. Army’s campaign against the Chiricahua Apache.
Position Details:
- Role: Visitor Services Volunteer
- Duration: 2025 Season
- Schedule: 32 hours per week (four 8-hour shifts, including weekends)
- Location: Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Arizona
What You’ll Do:
- Welcome and orient visitors at the park visitor center
- Answer questions and provide information about park’s rich history and resources
- Assist with retail operations and cash register sales
- Support day-to-day operations in the visitor center
- Opportunity to work on additional projects based on experience and interest
Qualifications:
- Experience interacting professionally with the public
- Ability to learn and accurately communicate park-specific information
- Comfortable operating a cash register and processing sales transactions
- Punctual, dependable, and capable of following procedures
- Ability to stand for extended periods and walk/hike as needed
- Strong communication skills and passion for history
- Valid driver’s license (operation of government vehicles required)
Working Environment:
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors
- Fall temperatures generally range from 45°F to 85°F
- Winter temperatures typically range from 35°F to 65°F
- Outdoor work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions
- Training and appropriate safety guidance will be provided

Housing and Amenities:
- RV sites located near administrative and maintenance buildings, 350 yards from visitor center
- Sites accommodate RVs or vehicles + campers up to 32 feet
- Full hookups (electricity, water, and sewage)
- Cell phone coverage available in the park
- Laundry facilities available on site
- Nearby communities for supplies and services include Willcox and Bowie
About Fort Bowie:
Fort Bowie National Historic Site preserves the remains of a military outpost instrumental in the campaign against the Chiricahua Apache. Located within the Madrean Sky Island Complex, the park boasts extraordinary biodiversity with a blend of grasslands, chaparral, and open forest ecosystems. Most visitors access the fort and visitor center via a scenic 1.5-mile trail that follows an historic wagon road built by the fort’s soldiers.
Volunteers may also have opportunities to occasionally assist at nearby Chiricahua National Monument.
Age and Uniform Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age to drive a government vehicle and 21 years of age to use certain equipment
- Volunteers are required to wear an official volunteer uniform with a name tag
- Volunteers will be provided with a set of shirts, hats, jackets, and name tags
- Volunteers must provide their own pants/shorts in appropriate colors (specific guidelines provided during orientation)
- Closed-toe shoes required when on duty
