DEPT: Forest Service

JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are looking for two (2) couples for a host opportunity in Haugan, Montana at the Savenac Historic Nursery, with easy access to Interstate 90. The compound is an historic tree nursery now used as a low-key visitor center with self-guided interpretive trails and four cabin rentals available to the public for rent through the Cabin Rental Program. This is a fun position that offers a variety of tasks and a chance to work with other great volunteers.

Two RV pads with hookups are available, one for each couple.

Duties include:

Manning the visitor center/museum. (3 to 4 days a week)

Stock and monitor all rental cabins, including pre-season cleaning.

Ground maintenance

Weed eating

Lawn mowing

Trash removal

Fertilize grass and spray for weeds.

Maintain equipment.

Inspect facilities before renter’s departure.

Miscellaneous painting.

Minor maintenance work.

The historic nursery was founded in 1907 as a Forest Service tree nursery. Nursery operations concluded in 1969 and now the site is used for cabin rentals and a visitor center.

The site has the only life-sized bronze commemorative CCC statue in the state of Montana honoring the work of the CCCs throughout our nation. Points of interest include: the Koch tree, one of the few trees that survived the 1910 fire along with a living memorial of spruce trees dedicated to the firefighters that lost their lives in the 1910 fires.
