Are you looking for a meaningful way to spend your summer in the heart of the White Mountains? The White Mountain National Forest is currently seeking Roving Caretaker Volunteers to join our team from mid-May through mid-October 2026. This is a work camper position, meaning volunteers must bring their own RV or travel trailer and will receive a full-hookup campsite in exchange for their service. Couples are strongly encouraged to apply!

What You’ll Do:

Roving Caretakers commit to 3 days per week, working approximately 8-hour shifts patrolling either the South Route or North Route of the Pemigewasset Ranger District. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Restocking and maintaining restroom facilities (toilet paper, cleaning)
  • Picking up litter and keeping recreation sites clean
  • Emptying garbage receptacles
  • Providing a friendly presence and helping ensure a positive experience for forest visitors

This role is essential to keeping our public lands safe, welcoming, and well-maintained throughout the busy summer season.

What You’ll Need:

  • Your own RV or travel trailer (required)
  • Ability to commit from mid-May to mid-October
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Comfort operating a Forest Service vehicle
  • A love for the outdoors and a willingness to work independently in remote areas

Why Volunteer?

  • Spend your summer immersed in nature
  • Be part of a passionate stewardship community
  • Enjoy a scenic campsite with full hookups at Russell Pond Volunteer Village
  • Make a tangible impact on public lands and visitor experiences
