The Gulf Coast District of Everglades National Park is seeking an enthusiastic individual or couple to volunteer and join our interpretation team!
DATES: 11/30/2020 – 4/10/2021
The selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work in our visitor center greeting visitors, answering questions in-person and over the phone, assisting with trip planning, working with Junior Rangers and issuing wilderness camping permits. The individual or couple will also deliver informal interpretation while roving the grounds and while staffing the visitor center desk, conduct formal interpretive programs, provide sweep assistance during ranger-led paddling programs and perform trail/grounds maintenance as needed. Additionally, the volunteer(s) may assist with special events throughout the season.
This opportunity is ideal for those who enjoy working with the public, have an interest in nature and/or history and are passionate about the outdoors. Selected candidate(s) should be able to stand/walk/hike for moderate periods of time and be willing to work outdoors in hot, humid and sunny weather. Volunteer(s) must be able to paddle a canoe or kayak across open water, swim, tread water and self-rescue in a canoe and kayak.
Government vehicle may occasionally be operated. A valid driver’s license is required.
Selected candidate(s) will work from the end of November through April. Volunteer(s) will work 32 hours a week. Daily shifts are usually eight hours long. Work schedule includes weekends and holidays with some evening work as needed. Typical hours for this position are from 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM including a 30-minute lunch.
The park will train all volunteers and provide all necessary equipment and materials to safely conduct required duties.
An RV/trailer pad is available for volunteer(s) willing to work 32 hours, (four days) per week, from approximately 11/30/2020 – 4/10/2021.
Amenities include water, electrical and septic hook-ups, and free, communal laundry facilities in the employee housing area. There are currently no other housing opportunities for this position. Public Wi-Fi is available inside/adjacent to the visitor center. Cell phone signals can be spotty or nonexistent in the area.
Prior to the selection process, all volunteer applicants will be interviewed and will have the opportunity to speak with the volunteer supervisor. This will give applicants the opportunity to ask questions that are specific to their situation and needs.
Please list two references who are unrelated to you and able to speak about your ability to perform the work associated with the position. Couples must complete applications for each person.
