JOB DESCRIPTION:

San Juan Island National Historical Park is seeking enthusiastic volunteer couples to join our team serving visitors. This is your chance to live and work on stunning San Juan Island while helping visitors discover the wonder of this unique landscape. 

 

Position Details: 

Role: Visitor Services Volunteer 

Duration: May 1 – September 7 

Schedule: 32 hours per week (four 8-hour shifts, including weekends) 

Location: San Juan Island, WA 

 

What You’ll Do: 

  • Welcome and orient visitors at the park visitor centers
  • Answer questions and provide information about park features and trails 
  • Provide information about the park, including, but not limited to: 
  • History of the border dispute known as “The Pig War”, including the lives, and routines of the American, and British soldiers on the island 
  • Native American culture and history in the Pacific Northwest 
  • Pioneer and settler history in the region during the 1800s 
  • Flora, fauna, and geology of the Pacific Northwest 
  • Assist with retail operations and cash register sales 
  • Support day-to-day operations in the visitor center, including opening and closing procedures and general cleaning 
  • Hike park trails to engage with visitors 
  • Carry out all duties in a professional and respectful manner 
  • Operate a wildlife viewing station using NPS equipment 

Qualifications: 

  • Experience interacting professionally with the public 
  • Ability to learn and accurately communicate park-specific information 
  • Ability to work along side other volunteers and contribute to a healthy work environment 
  • Comfortable operating a cash register and processing sales transactions 
  • Punctual, dependable, and capable of following procedures 
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods 
  • Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for public interaction 
  • You will spend a lot of time with the volunteers and staff that you are working and living near. Communication and respect are important skills for this position. 

Working Environment: 

  • 50% of work is performed inside the visitor center, at the front desk 
  • 50% of work is hiking trails, engaging with visitors away from the visitor centers. While working outdoors volunteers will be exposed to sun, wind, rain, cold.  
  • Contribute to and maintain a safe, positive working environment. The NPS has zero tolerance for hostile behavior in the workplace. 
  • Training and appropriate safety guidance will be provided 

What We Provide: 

  • Comprehensive training and orientation. 50% of training is virtual before arrival. 
  • RV campsite with full hookups (Wi-Fi service, electricity, water, and sewage) 
  • A supportive team environment in a stunning natural setting 

Housing and Amenities: 

  • RV sites located in American Camp and English Camp 
  • Sites accommodate RVs up to 32 feet 
  • Full hookups (electricity, WiFi, water, and sewage) 
  • Cell phone coverage is limited within the park. T-Mobile works best. 
  • Town of Friday Harbor for shopping, gas, groceries, laundromat, and entertainment 

Uniform Requirements: 

  • Volunteers are required to wear an official volunteer uniform with a name tag 
  • Volunteers will be provided with a set of button-up shirts, a jacket, and a hat 
  • Volunteers must provide their own pants in brown or tan (no other pant colors permitted) 
  • Closed-toe shoes required when on duty
