The Burro Creek Recreation Site is situated along Burro Creek within a very scenic Sonoran Desert Canyon at an elevation of 1,960 feet. This peaceful area has long been a favorite stop of travelers on nearby Highway 93. The Burro Creek Recreation Site is located 60 miles northwest of Wickenburg, AZ.
As the Burro Creek Campground Host, you will be interacting on a daily basis with a wide-variety of visitors including campers, day users, sightseers, and other members of the general public to provide information on the campground facilities/activities listed below:
Facilities
Camping and picnicking sites are equipped with a metal fire grill, picnic table, and large sun-shelter ramada.
Watchable Wildlife Exhibit
Interpretive desert garden
Information and Map exhibit
Drinking Water
Restrooms with flush toilets and sinks
Trailer/RV dump station
Group camping area for tents and/or recreational vehicles
Open campfires usually permitted within the fire grills
Activities
Picnicking and Camping
Trailhead for Back Country Trips—A large area of scenic wildlands are located upstream from the recreation site. Overnight backpackers and day hikers can park their vehicles here without charge
Photography—There are excellent spring wildflower displays in this area from March through May
Desert Garden—The recreation site has a small area set aside containing a large variety of native cacti. Each variety is identified in a separate brochure (available on site). Provides opportunity for visitors to become familiar with native plant life.
Additionally, you will ensure visitors are aware of the overnight camping fees and where to deposit their fee as well as verifying that all fees are paid in a timely manner. There may be a need to perform some light maintenance duties including running the site’s generator to ensure there is water available throughout the site, shutting off water valves in the event of a water line or connection break, brushing of site roads, trails, campsites, and day use areas, and various painting projects throughout the site. The camp host site at the campground has water and sewer hookups, but no electric.The camp host will be required to be onsite Friday through Monday weekly and will receive a stipend due to the distance the site is located from resources/supplies (e.g., grocery stores, laundromats, gas stations, etc.).
DUTIES
Educating visitors on site amenities, activities, and fee requirements.
Ensuring reservations of sites are kept up-to-date.
Communicating with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff on a regular basis on issues at the site.
Providing educational handouts to visitors regarding the area, BLM, and Arizona.
Completing various site maintenance tasks as needed such as: brushing site roads, trails, campsites, day use areas, and areas adjacent to facilities; operating the site generator to ensure that potable water is available throughout the site; minor repair or shutting down of water lines in the event of failure; and updating interpretive materials on information boards.
QUALIFICATIONS
Background in working with members of the general public.
Ability to communicate with a wide-variety of user groups.
Ability to carry out tasks independently or without direct supervision.
Basic knowledge of facilities and operation/maintenance of facilities including primarily water systems.
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) within the confines of the campground at slow speeds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Burro Creek Campground is located approximately 17 miles from services, primarily gas stations, and over 60 miles away from grocery stores, laundromats, or other services. The work would take place within the confines of the recreation site that receives high visitation from the public. The recreation site is highly developed and a UTV would be provided for traversing the site in carrying out the duties as described. The host would be provided with a campsite that has a water and sewer hookup (electric hookup may be available by Dec. 2020). The host’s campsite is located at the entrance of the site, and a “on duty” and “off duty” sign would be provided so that there would not be a need to carry out tasks on days other than required by this position. Temperatures at the campground during the work months range from highs around 95° F to lows around 42° F.
