Black Mesa Ranger District is seeking individuals and/or couples who are interested in spending the summer on the forested Mogollon Rim. Volunteers are sought to assist district recreation crews with general maintenance in the popular Rim Lakes Recreation Area.
Recreation Assistant Volunteers play an active role in the care and maintenance of dispersed recreation sites. Duties are assigned based on district needs and volunteers strengths and but include tasks such as routine restroom upkeep, dispersed camp host support, water hauling and delivery, light construction, litter cleanup, light trail maintenance, Visitor Center support, interpretive program presentation, and other duties as assigned. Recreation Assistant Volunteers are provided an RV site with full hook-ups at the district headquarters as well as uniform components, a radio, a vehicle, tools and all personal protective equipment necessary to carry out their duties.
The full season is from April through the end of October. Start and end dates are flexible. May 11 through Sep 15 is the mandatory minimum commitment.

Volunteers should have good communication skills and enjoy working with people.
The entire southern boundary of the Black Mesa Ranger District is defined by The Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the great Colorado Plateau. This massive escarpment, created by a fault line, presents a nearly vertical drop as much as 2,000 feet to the forested hills and desert below. Many vantage points along The Rim offer remarkable viewing opportunities of the mountains and valleys to the south. The dramatic rise of the Mogollon Rim produces a sudden uplift to approaching storms resulting in a high incidence of lightning strikes during the summer monsoon season.
Black Mesa’s elevations range from 4,500 feet in the northern Pinyon-juniper forests to 8,500 feet along the edge of The Rim where a dense mixed conifer forest thrives. The district encompasses approximately 616,000 acres of timber and has within its boundaries five high elevation fishing lakes, numerous scenic canyons, 8 developed campgrounds offering about 400 campsites, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, OHV trails, non-motorized areas, several small communities and many developed inholdings. The district hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors year-round from the Phoenix metropolitan area, which is within 2 hours travel time.
