Job Description
The BLM, Humboldt River Field Office in the Winnemucca District is hiring a camp host for the Water Canyon Recreation Area. The 600 acre developed 12 site campground includes, hiking trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, 3 pit toilets, 15 picnic tables, 3 dumpsters, BBQ’s, fire rings, day use sites and off-road vehicle routes. Volunteer events and organized events occur at the campground on a regular basis.
The camp host will be responsible for the following duties:
As a representative of the BLM the camp host will be respectful, courteous, friendly, helpful, polite and informative at all times. The camp host will identify themselves to the public as the camp host. If requested by the BLM the camp host will wear a BLM provided uniform. The camp host will answer inquiries from the public about public lands and provide recreation opportunity information. The camp host will educate campers about the campground rules and regulations.
The camp host will clean and maintain the campground. Daily duties include removing trash from all areas of the campground. Cleaning and stocking 3 pit toilets on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Cleaning the picnic tables. Clearing all trash and debris from established fire rings. The camp host will use BLM provided cleaning supplies and wear BLM provided personal protection equipment. If necessary, any hand tools that are required for the job will be supplied by the BLM. The camp host will check all campsites, fire rings for active fires and embers, day-use sites, pull off areas, trails and disc golf course when on duty. These are all located in zone 1 of the Water Canyon Recreation Area.
The camp host will inform the BLM of any camper rule violations, damages, graffiti, vehicle accidents and keep track of over staying campers. Since the campground is so close to town, we have a 3 – day stay limit for all campers. The camp host will politely inform overstaying campers that they are past the 3 -day stay limit. If campers are not compliant, the camp host will inform BLM personnel.
The camp host, when requested by the BLM, will participate in volunteer work events. Volunteer work events normally occur on Saturday mornings and may have up to 50 volunteers working on campground improvement projects.
The camp host will inform the BLM of downed trees, hazard trees and any tree/vegetation damage that has occurred.
The camp host will keep their campsite free of trash, clutter, and personal belongings will be stored out of sight.
The camp host will be allowed to keep 1 trailer and up to 2 vehicles in their campsite. One pet is allowed and will be in control of by the camp host at all times. Unruly pets will not be tolerated.
The camp host will abide by “leave no trace” principals.
The camp host will perform additional job duties as assigned.
The camp host will be required to complete a background check.
The camp host will receive free camping and $200 per month stipend with monthly paperwork submittal. There is a 1200-gallon black water holding tank for camp host use. There are NO water or electric hook ups.
The camp host will sign a Volunteer Agreement and a Risk Management Worksheet.
Start and ending dates- April 1 thru November 1. Work schedule – Thursday thru Monday, off Tuesday and Wednesday. Hours 9 -5.
