DATES: 8/1/2026 – 10/30/2026

DEPT: National Park Service

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Rio Grande Village Campground is a fairly large campground with 90 campsites opened during the summer months. It is located near the banks of the Rio Grande River, the international border between the United States and Mexico. It has small sites for tents and large pull-through sites for RVs up to 40’ in length.

This campground is at an elevation of 1,850 ft. While a beautiful location and campground, the volunteer should be prepared for hot weather. Temperatures in this area of the park average around 100 degrees in the day and 60 degrees at night, but can and will reach 115 degrees. The volunteer will be outside in the campground morning and evening, while spending the middle portion of the day in the air-conditioned Rio Grande Village Center, located a mile from the campground.

The campground also acts as a launching point for various trips down the Rio Grande via access at the boat ramp in the group campground. It is close to the Boquillas Port of Entry allowing visitors, with a valid passport, to cross over into Mexico for the day. Additionally, there are numerous hiking trails and back country roads for exploration into Big Bend’s backcountry, along with Hot Springs for a nice soak.

Major Duties include:

Greet visitors, assist them in locating sites, answer questions, and advise them of rules and regulations of the campground. This campground has 90 reservable sites during the summer.
Update the information kiosk and bulletin boards located throughout the campground and visitor center.
Correct minor regulation violations within the campground and report other to Law Enforcement Staff.
Pick up litter and clean out the grills, bear boxes, and picnic tables in the campground. Report all maintenance needs to the Campground Supervisor.
Monitor the campground reservations with the use of a Daily Arrival Report (DAR) which the camp host can access on the provided tablet. Using the DAR, each campsite sign will be posted with the upcoming reservation and changed as reservations change. The camp host will assist visitors in locating or changing their campsites.
Maintain camper log sheet.
Assist with medical incidents, traffic control, search and rescue, and other emergency service incidents, if requested.
Observe safety regulations while performing duties, such as wearing a reflective vest while assisting with traffic control situations.

This is a minimum 32-hours per week volunteer position. Volunteers will work 3 days on, 4 days off. The incumbent will furnish his or her own trailer or RV and live in the Rio Grande Village Campground. Electrical, Wifi, water and sewer hookups are provided free of charge and propane is reimbursed. Public showers and laundry facilities are available in the Rio Grande Village Store during this time. Additional laundry facilities are provided in the Rio Grande Village employee housing area.

Full-time volunteers who will work outside must be identifiable to the public. Uniform consists of dark brown or tan pants/shorts and a khaki work shirt with VIP patch sewn on the left-hand sleeve. Volunteers may obtain volunteer work shirts and hats at the volunteer cache.
