JOB DESCRIPTION:

River Ambassadors support safe and responsible recreation along the Snake River corridor by providing friendly, knowledgeable, and proactive visitor contacts at boat launches and river access points.

 

Volunteers patrol designated boat launches and landings to engage private boaters and floaters, share current river conditions, and offer guidance on appropriate river stretches based on experience level, water conditions, and craft type. River Ambassadors also promote safe boating practices—including proper personal flotation device (PFD) use—and help visitors understand park regulations and river etiquette.

 

A working knowledge of the Snake River and common river craft (such as rafts, drift boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards) is strongly recommended.

 

This position is educational and service-focused. River Ambassadors serve as a visible, approachable resource for visitors and do not perform enforcement activities. Their role is to support visitor safety, stewardship, and positive experiences on the river through accurate information and meaningful, respectful conversation.

 

RV Site provided, must bring your own RV.

 

JOB DUTIES:

Individuals will work established boat launch/landings along the Snake River (Jackson Lake Dam, Pacific Creek Landing, Deadman’s Bar, and Moose Landing)
Daily communication with the law enforcement river rangers
Operates a government motor vehicle safely.
Assist with launching and picking up river rangers during their river patrols. This could include but not limited to backing a boat trailer, assisting with moving a 12’-14’ raft from the trailer down to the water, assisting with boat prep, and communicating with rangers via a government issued hand held radio.
Boat patrols for those Ambassadors with the skill set to operate a boat safely and have been signed off by a permanent river ranger.
Provide visitor contact statistics for data tracking.
Work includes morning (starting as early as 0700) and evening (ending as late as 1900) shifts as well as weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

Volunteers are expected to display a pleasant, helpful and professional attitude during daily contact with visitors.
Experience working with people under challenging situations.
Ability to have positive interactions with visitors who are in violation of park regulations.
Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time in all weather conditions.
Carry out tasks and assignments with a “safety first” attitude.
Knowledge of the Snake River and the complexities of each stretch of the river that runs the length of Grand Teton National Park.
Knowledge of various boat types along with their specific capabilities.
Ability to operate a 12’ oar powered raft during river patrols (Not required and would need to be signed off by permanent river ranger).

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work requires periods of standing and walking, sometimes over rough surfaces.
Many hours will be spent standing near traffic and congested boat ramps.
Work will be performed in inclement weather, including hot, sunny, buggy, rainy, and/or cold conditions.
Volunteers may need to lift objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.
