DATES: 6/1/2021 – 12/19/2021

Join the interpretation and education team at Walnut Canyon National Monument. Just 15 minutes east of beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona, Walnut Canyon preserves more than 300 Native American cliff dwellings and is home to diverse plant and animal species.

Walnut Canyon National Monument is seeking volunteers to join our interpretation and education team. Volunteers at Walnut Canyon foster meaningful connections between park visitors and resources.

DUTIES
Volunteers aid seasonal and permanent staff with a variety of roles: answering visitor questions and providing orientations and introductions at the visitor center front desk, roving park trails, providing informal interpretation, assisting with parking lot management, staffing the Junior Ranger station, and helping with special projects. Physical requirements include the ability stand for long periods of time and the ability to hike at least .75 miles on a paved high-elevation park trail (6700′).

QUALIFICATIONS
Volunteers need to enjoy working with the public. On an average day, park staff and volunteers interact with hundreds of visitors. A friendly and approachable disposition and quality communication skills are important. Applicants must have the ability to work with a diverse group of co-workers and visitors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Walnut Canyon National Monuments is located just east of Flagstaff, Arizona. Located at 6,700′, the weather is variable. Summers are warm and dry, with highs in the 80s and low 90s. Afternoon monsoon thunderstorms are expected during the summer, but have been uncommon in recent years. Winters are cold and snowy. Average winter highs are in the 40s and lows in the teens. Flagstaff receives an average of 70″ of snow per year.

Volunteers will follow existing National Park Service COVID 19 protocols.

Housing: Walnut Canyon has two RV pads available for these positions. Applicants must have an RV, or arrange for housing outside of the park.

Commitment: 32 hours per week for volunteers choosing to stay at one for the park’s two RV pads.

Training: Volunteers will receive comprehensive training on both visitor center and park operations as well as the park’s natural and cultural history.
