DESCRIPTION
Join the Roving Rangers, a group of volunteers committed to connecting people to their public lands. This group fosters these connections through a number of interpretive opportunities.
DUTIES
Informal interpretation at Arizona Snowbowl – located at 10,800′, enjoy panoramic views of the San Francisco Peaks and diverse plant and animal life. Roving Rangers take the Grand Canyon Express chairlift towards the top of Agassiz Peak. From there they interact with visitors answering questions and interpreting the area.
Evening Programs – deliver formal interpretive evening programs at USFS campgrounds throughout the Coconino National Forest. Work with the Roving Ranger coordinators to develop your own program that focuses on local natural or cultural resources.
Guided Walks – lead a guided walk on one of the many trails within the Coconino National Forest or Flagstaff Area National Monuments.
Other potential duties include: writing an article for the groups weekly Ask a Ranger Column that is published in the local newspaper, digital programing: adapting existing or developing new educational material into digital programs, distributing promotional materials for weekly programs and other special projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
Roving Rangers primary duties include working at busy contact stations with the public, and working with a diverse and experienced group of volunteers.
Interested candidates should enjoy working with the public. Have a friendly and approachable disposition. Enjoy learning about natural and cultural history. Have quality communication skills and feel comfortable presenting in front of large groups of people.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Roving Rangers volunteer all throughout the Coconino National Forest and the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Flagstaff Arizona is located at 7,000′, but locations where Roving Rangers volunteer can be as high as 10,800′. Being comfortable working at high elevation is important.
Group members will follow existing United States Forest Service and National Park Service COVID 19 protocols.
Programs are primarily on the weekends. Evening programs are typically held on Friday and Saturday nights. Interested parties must be available on weekends and evenings.
