Forest Service
Winter volunteer hosts at campground/day use sites near Prescott, Arizona for cleaning, maintenance, and customer service.
The beautiful Prescott National Forest is accepting applications for Winter Season Campground/Day Use Host Volunteers near Prescott, Arizona. Hosting requires a person(s) with excellent customer service skills, friendly and patient personality, willingness to perform daily cleaning and light maintenance, and loves the outdoors. Applicants must be able to winterize their own RV/Motorhome. Host positions will be filled with individuals/pairs who own their own accommodation (RV/Camper/Motorhome) to live in while on site.
DUTIES
Customer service: provide information (regulations, recreational opportunities in the area, directions, where to make camping reservations, etc.); be visible to the public (wear volunteer uniform and present a positive image of the Forest Service). Cleaning/Maintenance: (Following all safety protocols) clean restrooms, grills, picnic tables, fire ring; empty trash cans, pick up litter within facility boundaries; extinguish and report abandoned campfires; some raking and occasional pruning of vegetation; occasional snow removal with shovel on primary walkways such as near toilet buildings, hydrants, and host site. Record Keeping/Management: maintain visitation logs; complete/submit supply and maintenance requests, documenting service hours, and other forms; report regulation violations to Forest Service personnel; contact designated county or federal emergency services if needed; track and accurately report hours of service to supervisor; maintain a balance between service time and personal time off. Duties may include opening and closing entrance gates at adjacent facilities. Where gates need to be managed, a mileage reimbursement may be available for use of personal vehicle.
Volunteer Host Hours: Hosts work 5 days per week, including weekends, and have two consecutive days off in the middle of the week (example, host may work Thurs-Mon w/ Tue/Wed off). Host duty hours vary by site and by daily needs, but average to about 30 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be able to communicate in a professional, pleasant, and respectful manner with all forest visitors/campers and Forest Service personnel; walk on uneven terrain at high altitudes (above 6,000 ft); lift up to 30 pounds; use shovels, rakes, brooms, and common cleaning supplies; safely drive golf cart (not available for all locations), current driver license, good driving record, and proof of vehicle/RV insurance required. A background check is required upon arrival which includes fingerprints and voluntary release form(s). Pets permitted with proper vaccination documents, and rules apply. In addition to an application, please submit at least 3 professional/personal references.
Work is almost entirely outdoors at sites which may feature any combination of the following recreational activities: camping, picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing, and mountain biking. No handling of recreation fees is permitted by hosts. Because these are winter host positions, the applicant will be expected to work outdoors in cold, wet, and snowy conditions. This can mean some snow shoveling and posting caution signs when conditions become hazardous. It can also mean a few days of little to no access between the host site and town if large snow accumulations occur in a short period of time. It can also mean occasional power outages, though this is not common. Host should be able to sustain their personal needs if/when temporary isolation or power outages occur. Average annual snowfall for the area is 13 inches. Host sites have full hookups (electric, water, sewer) and a limited reimbursement for propane costs is available only for the winter season.
