Volunteer Campground Host at Shirttail Creek

Come join us as a Volunteer Campground Host on the Tahoe National Forest.
Shirttail Creek Campground located on the banks of Sugar Pine Reservoir is a beautiful forested campground complete with easy lake side access and amazing views. The campground consists of 30 campsites that are heavily used weekdays and weekends.
 As a campground host, you will oversee this campground ensuring that reservation information is posted on each campsite. As guests arrive, you will be their first point of contact giving you the opportunity to greet them and let them know about campground rules and regulations as well as other local information. The forest service staff will stock your site with firewood for you to offer to the guest on a donation basis The staff will also provide deep cleaning of restrooms in the campground on a weekly basis and rely on you to stock restrooms on a day to day basis.
Communications in the campground are limited with cell phone reception available only at the main entrance road 2 miles away. We strongly encourage all of our host to obtain a satellite subscription service for communications.
Volunteers will receive a fixed reimbursement of $40/Day/person based on a five-day work week. This reimbursement is meant to help cover the cost of volunteering and is not negotiable. No other forms of reimbursement are authorized; however, the staff can provide materials and equipment in advance if requested.
Your site amenities will consist of: a location to park your trailer, water and sewer hookup, and limited storage space. There is no electricity at the campsite.

Local activities in the vicinity include: Hiking on a paved trail around the lake, boating (10 MPH speed limit) swimming, canoeing, fishing, bicycle riding, hunting in the fall, kayak rentals, and Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) trails and shooting locations nearby. Excellent volunteer candidates for these positions will have the following strengths:

  • Outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform light maintenance work in outdoor conditions
  • Ability to maintain daily written logs
  • Ability to interact with diverse visitors while maintaining a positive, helpful and non-confrontational attitudeHost Duties will include the following:
  • Welcoming visitors and providing appropriate Forest information
  • Informing visitors of Forest Regulations and campground Courtesy Rules
  • Encouraging fee compliance and Courtesy Rule adherence
  • Tracking daily arrivals and posting incoming reservations
  • Performing light landscape and bathroom maintenance.
  • Reporting emergencies and providing District Recreation staff with pertinent daily information
  • Setting a positive camping example for other forest visitors, keeping a clean, presentable and welcoming campsite and encouraging common courtesy throughout the campground.

Requirements of the positions

  • Pass a minimal background check and possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Volunteer 4 hours a day / 20 hours weekly and be available other times for public interactions
  • Provide your own personal RV accommodations maintained to be welcoming and approachable by the public.Local Recreation Staff will provide full training and support in duties. Hosts perform daily responsibilities independently without direct supervision. Forest Recreation employees will make near daily contact to provide support, heavy maintenance and regulatory compliance.  On the Tahoe National Forest you will be working individually in your designated campground, but also as part of a larger Forest wide campground host program with up to 35 other volunteer hosts. Specific campsite conditions vary greatly from low elevation riverside campgrounds to higher elevation, mountain, lakeside settings. The majority of Hosts sites have minimal services. Some may have electricity, some may have water and some have waste holding tanks.

  • Performing light landscape and bathroom maintenance.
