This position is for a Gallo Campround Host at Chaco Culture National Historical Park. There are three different time periods to volunteer which include April-June, June-August, and September-October. Please specify which date preference you have to become a Campground Host.
There are many benefits to working as a campground host in Chaco, a World Heritage site, International Dark Sky Park, and a National Historical Park in New Mexico:
· A complimentary campsite in the campground, including electric, water, and sewage hook-ups. (Host will need their own RV).
· Access to abundant back-country hiking opportunities.
· Within a day’s drive are numerous NPS sites and other recreational opportunities in the Four Corners Region.
· The opportunity to live and work in arguably one of the most important archaeological and cultural sites in the United States.
· Within a few hours’ drive of diverse towns and cities, including the ability to explore iconic and abundant New Mexican culture and cuisine.
Gallo Campground has 32 campsites: 27 tent/RV combination sites and 5 RV only sites. The RV only sites can accommodate trailers/campers up to 35 feet. The campground is very busy during the spring and fall, slowing down in the hottest part of the summer. Throughout the season there are usually many guided tours of archaeological sites, weekly night sky programs, and seasonal special events which you can attend.
Duties of a Camp Host include:
· Greet and introduce yourself to our campers as they arrive, confirm their reservations, inform them of the overall park and camping rules and fees, and inform them about the park. Hosts are expected to assist visitors who stop by the host campsites.
· Maintain a clean and orderly campground: pull expired fee tags, remove ashes from fire pits, pick up trash throughout campground, trim and pull weeds. Hosts are expected to notify Park Maintenance of any problems that may occur, such as toilet or sink issues.
· Ensure visitors comply with park and campground rules and notify Park Law Enforcement of any violations and/or emergencies.
· Use handheld radios to communicate with park staff and other volunteers in a professional manner.
A minimum commitment of two months is required, and we are looking for hosts for the months of April through October. The season will be divided into 3 blocks: April-June, June-August, and September-October.
Please note that at 6,200 feet in elevation, Chaco Culture National Historical Park is in the high desert of New Mexico and is very isolated. Access to common amenities, such as grocery stores and hospitals is limited. It is roughly a 60-mile drive, with between 13-20 miles of unpaved road to reach the nearest stores for supplies and amenities. Weather during the 4 seasons can include snow in March – April, monsoon rains in July – August, high temperatures between June – September, and cold nights during September – October. These conditions can make the unpaved roads leading to Chaco Canyon impassable for up to 2-3 days.
Please include your contact information, 2 references, the months you would be willing to work in the email.
