DESCRIPTION
Sawtooth Valley Work Center Assistant in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
One volunteer or a couple. Volunteer responsibilities will include groundskeeping and basic facilities maintenance around the Sawtooth Valley Work Center. Volunteers will support the Wilderness and Trails Program by repairing trailhead signs, stocking wilderness permit boxes, managing trailhead registers and shuttling vehicles for backcountry employees. Volunteers hours can range from 24-32 hours per week. Most duties will take place in an outdoor environment. Volunteers drive a government vehicle on highways and forest roads.
DUTIES
Groundskeeping duties include lawn mowing, managing sprinkler systems, and feeding horses. Volunteer(s) will assist with general upkeep of buildings around the work center. Volunteer(s) may use hand and power tools. Volunteer(s) will stock new permits and collect filled out permits at Wilderness access points. The permit and trail registration box locations range from a 10-minute drive to an eight-hour drive round trip and a quarter mile walk to a 6-mile hike round trip. Duties can be split based on interest and skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
Volunteer(s) need to be independent, organized and enjoy hiking for Wilderness permit collection. Volunteer(s) will hike 10-20 miles per week for work duties.
Volunteer(s) should have basic carpentry skills, experience using power tools, and be self-motivated for work center and trailhead maintenance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Volunteer(s) will be based out of the Sawtooth Valley Work Center, 15 miles south of Stanley, Idaho, in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. A trailer pad with hookups is available. The view of the Sawtooth Range from the work center is stunning, and many trailheads and lakes are just a short drive. The work center provides seasonal housing to the approximately 15-20 seasonal field going employees. Laundry facilities are provided. Cell service is marginal (Verizon provides the best chance for service). Shared internet is available in a communal area. There is a pay phone available.
Stanley, Idaho is an international destination and is the gateway to the Sawtooth and White-Clouds Mountains. It is a small town that is vibrant and busy during the summer months. Visitors come to Stanley and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area to mountain bike, backpack, fly fish, white water raft, and hunt. There are two grocery stores and service stations located in Stanley where you can get basic supplies. the nearest major grocery store is in Ketchum, 45 miles away.
