Job Description
DATES: 5/1/2021 – 10/3/2021
Live, volunteer, and play in a whitewater playground. The Bureau of Land Management is seeking Campground Hosts to help operate recreation facilities on the Upper Colorado River. Campground Hosts will live 100 feet from world class rafting, fishing, and hiking. Other nearby recreation opportunities include off-roading, biking, climbing, skiing, hunting, and much more.
Hosts Duties: Hosts will serve as representatives at popular recreation sites for the Bureau of Land Management. They will interact with visitors and commercial outfitters, assist in managing campgrounds and boat ramps, and perform minor maintenance at BLM facilities. Volunteers will be tasked with cleaning restrooms, disposing trash containers, and performing light maintenance at campsites. Camp Hosts will also have the opportunity to assist Park Rangers on various projects along the 20 mile river corridor.
Dates Needed: Hosts are needed for a minimum of two months from May 1st to October 3rd . Campground hosts are expected to volunteer at least 32 hours a week. Volunteers are required to work on weekends and holidays.
Work Environment: Hosts will be working outdoors at an altitude of 7,000 ft. and will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions with temperatures ranging from 30 – 90 degrees.
Volunteer Requirements:
– Volunteer must be able to work on weekends and holidays
– Volunteer must be able to work outdoors standing for long periods of time in variable weather conditions
– Volunteer must provide their own camper or RV
– Volunteer cannot be employed by an outfitter who has a permit with the Kremmling BLM Office
– Volunteer must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
– Volunteer must possess a valid state drivers license and complete a defensive driver training
– Volunteer must be able to effectively communicate with a diverse visitor base
Reimbursement: Volunteers who assist the BLM for at least 32 hours a week and consistently complete assigned duties will be eligible for a $38.00 per day volunteered reimbursement. Volunteers will also have a camper pad provided for them by the BLM.
Camp Host Locations:
Pumphouse Recreation Site and Campground is located approximately 13 miles southwest of Kremmling, CO. Pumphouse is a float boat put-in point for commercial and private rafting, kayaking, and fishing trips on the Colorado River. Pumphouse has three raft launch sites, 18 individual campsites, 2 group campsites, trailheads, and picnic areas. Electric, water, and sewer hook-ups are available for hosts. Pumphouse is the most popular recreation site in the Upper Colorado River Special Recreation Management Area and sees between 40,000 and 80,000 visitors between April and November. Pumphouse is located along the Colorado River Headwaters Scenic Byway. There is no cell service at this site. Volunteers will be provided with a radio to communicate with BLM staff and emergency personnel.
Radium Recreation Site and Campground is located approximately 5 miles downriver from Pumphouse Recreation Site (16 miles southwest of Kremmling and 25 miles from Edwards, CO). Radium has two raft launch sites, 9 individual campsites, 2 group campsites, and picnic areas. Electric and sewer RV hook-ups are available for hosts. Potable water hookups are not available. Radium can see around 40,000 visitors between April and November. There is no cell service at Radium. Volunteers will be provided with a radio to communicate with BLM staff and emergency personnel.
State Bridge Boat Launch – There is no campground at this site. State Bridge is a day use site with a picnic area and boat launch. The site includes two boat take-outs, two vault toilets, picnic areas, and a large parking lot. Non-potable water, electricity, and sewer are available for hosts. The main duties for the host are to keep recreation facilities clean, monitor the public boat ramp, and provide information to the public. State Bridge is located on Highway 131 about 20 miles from Edwards, CO. There is no cell phone service at this site. Volunteers will be provided with a radio to communicate with BLM staff and emergency personnel.
Surrounding Communities:
Pumphouse, Radium, and State Bridge recreation sites are located on the Colorado River between Kremmling, CO and Bond, CO. Kremmling offers services such as gasoline, groceries, restaurants, and medical facilities. Large resort communities including Vail, Steamboat Springs, and Breckenridge are all less than 75 miles away.
