Job Description

Own an RV? Want to live in a National Park where you will frequently see deer, bison, and other wildlife? Does assisting visitors during their visit appeal to you? If you answered yes to these three questions, then we may have the perfect volunteer position for you. Apply to be a campground host at Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

 

Theodore Roosevelt National Park protects 70,000+ acres between the three units of the park with 700,000+ visitors annually.

 

This opportunity will be located in Cottonwood Campground at the South Unit of the park near Medora, ND. Cottonwood Campground has 72 sites for tent and RV campers. Half of the sites are on recreation.gov while the remaining half are first come, first serve. Bison and deer are known to frequent Cottonwood Campground. Cell phone signal is extremely limited in the campground but can be found a short distance away.

 

Volunteer for the entire summer or a minimum of 2 weeks.

Host site is 40 x 20. Power/Water/Sewer hookups available.

 

 

DUTIES
The Campground Host’s main role is to act as an ambassador for the park by being friendly, courteous and helpful to visitors. Specific duties may include any or all of the following:

 

Assist with registering campers and provide information on campground rules
Performing compliance checks for payment or site assignments
Identify issues needing to be addressed; contact park officials to answer unique/difficult questions and to address issues
Gathering statistical data on campground usage
Roving the campground for minor rules infractions, educating visitors on regulations
Providing information on recreational opportunities to the public
Performing minor campground maintenance projects
Assisting campground staff as needed
Informing entrance station and contact station when campground is full or close to full
Opening or closing campground facilities as needed
Operating government vehicles including GEM cart
Utilizing portable park radio communications

Various other duties may be performed in the campground based on interest and skills. Camp hosts are normally are on their feet for most of the work day, which includes walking, standing, and minor physical labor. They also must be prepared to work in a variety of weather conditions.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS DESIRED:

Be friendly, polite, respectful, and enjoy working with people.
Be able to work independently and as a member of team.
Be able to communicate effectively with new people and other team members.
Be reliable, punctual, and represent the National Park Service in a professional manner
Be adaptable to new situations and changing circumstances.

 

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Must be willing to learn about operations and general information on Theodore Roosevelt National Park in order to provide accurate information to visitors.
Wear volunteer shirt and name badge (provided)
Wear Khaki (or brown) shorts or pants (you provide)
Wear sturdy shoes (hiking boots preferred)
Sign a volunteer agreement form.
Valid state driver’s license required
Friendly attitude and demeanor
