Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Trail/Campground Maintenance • Visitor Information • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of BLM DescriptionGeneral Description:             Buttercup Campground is located in the southern portion of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area with easy access from Interstate 8 at the Grays Well Rd Exit. On average the Buttercup area receives approximately 140,000 visitors each year with the majority of the visitation occurring between mid-October and mid-April. The Buttercup campground host will stay on site during the high use season at the designated camp host site directly behind Buttercup Ranger Station (BRS) in order serve as a public contact when the ranger station is closed. General Position Duties: Greet all visitors with a positive, courteous, and respectful attitude as they enter the recreation area and maintain good working relationship with fellow employees, government agency representatives, and visiting public. Answer visitor questions and distribute BLM information (maps and brochures), Provide general ISDRA information including rules, regulations, policies, and recreation opportunities. Volunteer hosts do not have the authority to enforce any BLM rules or regulations, or local or state laws, and they are to contact BLM or San Bernardino Dispatch (FICC) if an issue arises. Inform visitors needing an ISDRA permit where ISDRA permits can be purchased. Issue campfire permits to visitors, and store permit copies in a secure location to be submitted to supervisor at the end each month. Serve as a point of contact for medical, law enforcement, and other emergencies that require BLM or other agency assistance, when needed. Conduct basic campground and station maintenance including, but not limited to, sweeping walkways, trimming/pruning vegetation, picking up trash, dry cleaning vault toilets, and restocking toilet paper. Notify BLM of major maintenance issues (i.e. broken doors/ handles/ windows, graffiti, downed road signs, and significant sand on roadways.) Keep accurate timesheets detailing hours worked and submit timesheet and reimbursement form to supervisor monthly Specific Position Duties: In order to receive the full reimbursement amount of $250.00 dollars, the Buttercup Campground Host must complete and document a minimum of 20 hours of service each week. BLM has developed four weekly service focus areas: 5 hours each week staffing the Buttercup Ranger Station visitor center during normal hours to assist with opening and closing the station; answering questions; and providing information on rules, regulations, policies, and recreation opportunities. Normal station hours are Friday- Sunday 9:00am-5:30pm PST and Friday- Sunday 8:00am-4:30pm PDT. Station hours may be extended during holiday weekends and periods of high visitation. 5 hours each week performing general grounds/facility maintenance to include: Sweeping exterior ranger station walkways Sweeping, mopping, and cleaning the BRS visitor area Trimming/pruning BRS exterior vegetation in planters to clear walkways Picking up trash around the exterior of ranger station and front parking lot perimeter 5 hours each week performing general campground facilities maintenance to include: Checking CXT vault toilets, restocking toilet paper, picking up trash, and dry cleaning as needed Picking up trash and debris around campground as needed Reporting any major maintenance issues such as broken doors and windows or graffiti to supervisor 5 hours each week making positive visitor contacts at the campgrounds:   Greet visitors in a courteous and professional manner to answer questions and educate visitors of the rules, regulations, and recreational opportunities within the ISDRA and surrounding area Issue camp fire permits when requested by visitors Distribute BLM information such as maps and guides to visitors Inform visitors on upcoming education outreach events within the ISDRA *Time spent on each focus area may be adjusted as needed. Physical activity/fitness requirements: Generally moderate, may include frequent lifting and bending, climbing into and out of vehicle such as large trucks or OHV’s, transferring equipment no more than 50 lbs. to multiple locations Conduct and Expectations: While in the position of BLM Volunteer Campground Host you are a direct representative of the BLM, and as such you are expected to conduct yourself in the same professional and courteous manner as a paid BLM employee is supposed to do themselves in performance of job duties, visitor contacts, and general interaction with members of the public. BLM Volunteers you are expected to set the example for visitors to the Imperial Sand Dunes by following all ISDRA rules, regulations, and policies. BLM Volunteers must also adhere to all relevant BLM policies including, but not limited to following the public contact protocol identified in the Volunteer Camp Host Risk Assessment, Equal Employment opportunity, Anti-Discrimination/ Harassment Policies, and Drugs/ Alcohol.
