Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Trail/Campground Maintenance • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of FS DescriptionBlack Mesa Ranger District, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, is seeking individuals and/or couples who are interested in spending all or part of the summer on the forested Mogollon Rim. Volunteers are sought to host dispersed camp areas within the Rim Lakes Recreation Area east of Payson, Arizona.  Hosts provide an identified presence and play an active role in the care and maintenance of the campground; carrying out such duties as providing visitor information, litter cleanup, and campsite monitoring. Hosts are a valued asset to our recreation management program and act as Forest Service liaisons.   Hosts must be good communicators and enjoy interacting with people.  Hosting provides a wonderful opportunity spend the summer in the cool mountain comfort of the Mogollon Rim.  It combines pleasure and relaxation with the enjoyment and stimulation of meeting new people.  Campground hosts must provide their own fully self-contained living unit (i.e. motor home, fifth wheel, or travel trailer). Hosts are provided with a free campsite, identifying sign, training materials, maps and literature for public distribution, and volunteer uniform components. Hosts are needed for dispersed campgrounds were no water or other hook-ups are available; however, weekly potable water delivery is a possibility and sewer dump stations are located nearby.  Hosts are expected to set a good example by role modeling a clean and uncluttered living area and by keeping pets leashed as required by regulations. Duties: Duties vary by volunteer opportunity and could include services such as below: Greet visitors and provide information (e.g., regulations, recreational opportunities in the area, directions, payment of fees, etc.). Assist visitors with finding available camp sites. Clean steel fire rings. Pick up litter and other refuse.  Performs minor maintenance (i.e. painting, kiosk repair, sign installation, pruning, other maintenance duties based on volunteer’s skill and comfort level.) Extinguish and report abandoned campfires. Report incidents or violations to Forest Service Dispatch and appropriate Forest Service personnel. Qualifications: Ability to communicate in a pleasant and effective manner with visitors, volunteers, and Forest Service employees. Positive, helpful, approachable, and friendly attitude Basic familiarity with natural resources and ecology  a neat, professional appearance Ability to walk over uneven terrain and work in various weather conditions (rain, snow, cold and heat).  Ability to lift 30-50 pounds is helpful Ability to use hand tools, shovels, rakes, and common cleaning supplies is helpful Ability to live and work at elevations above 7,000’ Volunteer positions require a background check with complete fingerprint card(s) and voluntary release form(s). The Black Mesa Ranger District’s Rim Lakes Recreation Area is located about 2 hours northeast of the Phoenix metropolitan area and about 30 minutes east of the community of Payson on Highway 260. This forested area offers numerous hiking and mountain biking trails, camping, sightseeing, and is dotted with high elevation lakes that provide excellent opportunities for fishing and canoeing.  HOUSING & AMENITIESType: Camp SitesDescription: Camp site in undeveloped campground no hook-ups
