DESCRIPTION:

John Martin Reservoir is seeking one volunteer to assist with maintenance of natural and cultural resources at John Martin Reservoir and Dam.

 

Work will be performed Monday- Friday between the hours of 0700- 1630 for a total of 24 hours a week. This position is mainly grounds-keeping around the office (mowing, trimming, weed pulling), with some opportunities to engage with the public and assist in the management of natural and cultural resources. The use of UTVs for trimming vegetation and cleaning shorelines littered with trash may be required. Other duties as assigned or requested.
DUTIES
Grounds-keeping services, such as: operating string-trimmers, operating riding lawn-mowers, using manual tools to clear brush, etc.
Use of various hand tools, power tools, machines, and chemicals to perform duties as directed.
Maintaining tools and machines properly.
Cleaning trash from camp and fishing areas.
Other duties, as assigned, depending on skills/abilities.

Time Commitment: Volunteers for this position will be asked to commit to at least 24 hours a week during their term of service.

QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer for this position.
Prior maintenance experience preferred.
Vehicle Operation: Volunteer must possess a valid driver’s license, be able to comfortably operate a riding lawnmower, a 4×4 Truck, and a 4×4 Polaris-Style UTV. Volunteer will be required to operate these vehicles on improved roads near the Office, as well as off-road (in soft sand and brush).

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Demands: This position requires significant physical effort with frequent moving and lifting of objects weighing up to fifty pounds, in addition to continuous standing, walking, bending, and reaching. At times this may include working in uncomfortable or awkward positions for extended periods. In addition, the volunteer may need to climb stairs and ladders, work on uneven surfaces, and be on their feet for extended periods of time.

The position has the possibility of working in extreme temperatures that can range to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to poisonous and venomous plants and animals is possible.

Housing: The Project will provide partial RV/Trailer hookup, including 50 or 30 amp electric, water, septic, picnic table, and an established pad. Volunteers must provide their own RV or trailer. There is no cable TV or phone hookup at the volunteer RV/Trailer site, although volunteers have successfully used their own satellite dishes. Government computers are not available for personal internet use.
